Step 1- Choosing Game Type
After running Civilization II, you will be
taken to a screen that has following options:
- Start a New Game
- Start on Premade World
- Customize World
- Begin Scenario
- Load a Game
- View Hall of Fame
- View Credits
While Start a New Game option creates a completely random world (you only specify its size), we will begin our game on a world that was previously created with Civilization II Map Editor that's on your Civilization II CD-ROM. Select Start on Premade World from the menu (and, naturally, click OK).
Step 2 - Choosing a Map
A dialog box will open, most probably already in the directory with premade worlds in it. The following premade worlds already come with your CD-ROM package:
europe.mp | a map of Europe |
greece.mp | a map of ancient Greek empire and neighboring lands |
mediterr.mp | a map of the Mediterranean |
pacific.mp | a map of Asia and Australia |
world.mp | a large map of the world |
world_m.mp | a medium map of the world |
world_s.mp | a small map of the world |
For this tutorial, we will use medium world map. Choose world_m.mp in the dialog box.
Step 3 - Configuring the World
New prompt will appear, asking you if you want to randomize world's resource squares. Choose No. Choose No again when the game asks you if you want to randomize players' starting location. Choosing No at this point means that you will start building your civilization on the same location on the map as the real civilization evolved.
Next, a screen for selecting difficulty level will appear with following options:
Chieftain (easiest)
Warlord
Prince
King
Emperor
Deity
Select Prince - the medium level.
On next screen, you are prompted to choose a number of total competing civilizations. Select 4 Civilizations.
On Barbarian Activity screen you are presented the following options:
Villages Only
Roving Bands
Restless Tribes
Raging Hordes
We don't want to experience too many difficulties caused by barbarians (later guerrillas), so choose Villages Only option.
We will be using Standard Rules.
Step 4 - Configuring Our Civilization
After choosing your gender, you are prompted to select a nation. For this tutorial, we will govern the Russians.
Type your name in the box and select City Style. The best is if you leave it set on default - Medieval Castle type for Russians.
Step 5 - Building World
After you select the style, the game will build the world. I got lucky, besides getting the knowledge of Irrigation, Mining and Roads (you always get these), I also got Alphabet, Bronze Working and Horseback Riding.
Step 5 concludes this chapter of tutorial.
You can go to next chapter (Starting - The Ancient Age), to the Main Tutorial Page or return home.
