Browsers That Hate Java 1.1
Few web browsers support Java 1.1 yet. Fine. But boy, some of them really don't like Java 1.1.
The worst offender is Netscape 3.0, which shows the page containing my popup menu examplet as a single, huge, useless expanse of gray. Not even the page's text appears. Inconceivable!
Internet Explorer 3.0 is a bit better--it doesn't pull the huge gray page trick. Instead, it puts an obscure error message on the status line whenever you move the cursor over the applet. One version's error message is "exception: java.lang.SecurityException." Another version's error message is "error: java.lang.NoSuchFieldError: java/awt/MenuComponent: field name not found."
As of this date, the only browser I know of that eats Java 1.1 is Sun's HotJava browser.
