C64s: The Commodore 64 was the first computer I owned and therefore my first experience with computers. I bought it when I was about twelve years old and I have used it for several years. I enjoyed several games on this system, often games that have never appeared on PC. I believe there is no computer system around that has more games to support it. Well, the C64s emulator emulates the good old CBM on your PC. The emulation is very good (about 99%), and it works with most C64 games. It also emulates the SID synthesizer chip and joystick input can be redirected to the keyboard or other input devices. Not all programs work though, especially games with integrated fast-loaders give problems (e.g. Test Drive). Games for the CBM64 can be downloaded from the Internet for free on several locations. A good location is the Arnold FTP site , but there are many others. The disadvantage of the C64s emulator is that it is a demo version that only works for 10 minutes. The registered version removes this handicap of course, and it also offers extra features, like for example support of CBM diskdrives and other peripherals. However, the full program costs more than a complete old second-hand C64, so, maybe you're better of with the complete system ;-) Author: Miha Peternel |

DirectX:
DirectX is a set of DLL files that are required to run many of the newest Windows 95
games. DirectX gives games faster access to your computer's video memory and is used by
many of the latest software titles. DirectX also includes Direct-3D, which can work with
special 3D graphic boards to enhance gameplay in games. Before installing, please read the
installation instructions at the DirectX home page. DirectX is needed for most new Windows
95 games that are appearing these days. DirectX currently does not run under Windows NT. A
control panel add-on for DirectX, which this is not included
with DirectX, can be downloaded by clicking here. Author: Microsoft Corp. Category: DLL's Version: 5.2 File size:3.6 MB License: Free |

FreeMem
Professional: FreeMem Pro is a very nice utility that helps you enhance
the performance of your PC by freeing up physical RAM! Instead of letting Windows memory
management grind your applications to a halt, you can use FreeMem to specify an exact
amount of RAM that you wish to free up. Before freeing up the RAM, Windows will swap
whatever is in that area of memory to its swap file. Wasted RAM that is gobbled up by
large applications, RAM that is reserved for file caching, and large program libraries
that are in memory are allocated to the swap file, giving your current application more
memory to use and improving performance. FreeMem runs in the background, freeing up a set
amount of RAM at regular intervals. A Taskbar icon lets you view memory statistics at any
time, and in low-memory conditions you can run an emergency free-up. There is also a
freeware version available called FreeMem.
FreeMem also frees up memory, but it doesn't offer scheduling features or a tray icon. Personally, I have my doubts about the functionallity of the program. I have used the program for a while now (about two months), but when I disabled it recently, my systems performance appeared to increase. Author:

More
Properties: More Properties lets you customize Windows 95 in ways not allowed
in the standard interface. The program offers many new shell features. You can hide
desktop icons, hide Network Neighborhood, clear histories at Startup, remove the
"Shortcut to" prefix on new shortcuts, create custom utility buttons, and more.
So, in general, More Properties is the same type of program as TweakUI from the Powertoys, X-Setup,
Winhacker and Shellwizard. I
wonder why I have included so many links these type programs on my site ... mmmm ... what
the heck ...I leave them all in :-) Anyway, More Properties is my favorite, mainly because
it is free. And it has a nice interface ... but so do the others ... no problem at all ...
The link provided up here is the link to the small version, but also a normal and full version
exists (which contain some general DLL's). Author:

MS RegClean: RegClean is a fairly small application
that can save a lot of boot time. It clears the Windows 95 registry, safely and
effectively. With the registry cleaned out, you'll have a shorter wait whenever you boot

Norton Crashguard: Norton
CrashGuard from Symantec runs in the background and monitors your system for crashes.
It recovers from the crash and lets you save any unsaved data. It can trap 16-bit
and 32-bit crashes. It can't recover all crashes though, but it's much better than nothing
and it doesn't eat up too much memory compared to some other Norton products. Crashguard
also features a anti-freeze function, which can recover programs that have stopped
responding. Another nice feature is a statistics log which shows the applications that
crashed in the past. Well, guess what is my number one? The windows/internet explorer!
Another program like this can be found in the Nuts & Bolts
software package. Author: Symantec

Nuts & Bolts: Nuts & Bolts is a suite of powerful yet easy to use Windows 95
software utilities that helps you keep your PC working at optimum efficiency and speed.
Nuts & Bolts can help you protect your valuable information, or recover it if you've
already encountered a problem with a disk drive. This program can be compared to the
famous Norton Utilities from Symantec. It seems to
offer even more that this big competitor. Nuts and Bolts contains stuff like disk
defragmentation and repair tools, windows cleaning and optimizing tools, prevention and
protection tools and even some diagnostics software and quite a nice benchmark program. I
finally got my windows start menu delay fixed with the EZ Setup tool, something that
couldn't be setup properly with any of the windows tweaking tools I own since I installed
IE4.0. The major problem of N&B is it's stability though. I have experienced many
crashes caused by some modules of Nuts and Bolts. For example the graphics card benchmark
and the diagnostics tab. But despite all that it is quite a nice program to try out. Author: Helix Software |

S3VBE 2.0: S3VBE 2.0 is a TSR program, which installs
a VESA VBE/Core 2.0 for S3 graphics cards with a VESA VBE 1.2 bios. It supports the
following S3 graphics chips:Vision864, Vision868, Vision964, Vision968, Trio32, Trio64,
Trio64V+, Trio64UV+, Trio64V2/DX, Trio64V2/GX, ViRGE, ViRGE/VX, ViRGE/DX, ViRGE/GX. This
freeware program can be a very good alternative to SciTech's VBE 2.0 driver, only it
doesn't contain the nice SciTech utilities. S3VBE works perfectly with Quake. Author: Dietmar Meschede |

SciTech Display Doctor: SciTech Display Doctor is a
collection of useful utilities that fix many common problems associated with Super VGA
(SVGA) graphics cards. SciTech Display Doctor updates your graphics card to the latest
standards, so you can be sure programs will work correctly and will run as fast as
possible on your system. Use this software with Quake or other games that need a VESA 2.0 driver. The lastest Scitech
even offers the VESA 3.0 standard, not that I knew of its existence. Scitech will only run
for a trail period of 21 days, after that a retail version can be obtained. There is also
a DOS version available. Author: SciTech Software, Inc. |

Configuration as well as search and manipulate DLLs and duplicate files. TechFacts has the
ability to send any of its data via FAX, MAPI Email and INTERNET email - completely
built-in and integrated - no additional setup! Originally written to the specs of a tech
support organization, this release adds many features that make it as simple as a click to
diagnose and solve Windows 95 problems. In general this program offers functionality like
programs as TweakUI from the Powertoys,
X-Setup, Winhacker, Shellwizard and More properties, but also functionality of a
program like Infospy (also from Dean Software Design). Author: Dean Software design |

Winbench
98: WinBench® 98 is a subsystem-level benchmark that measures the
performance of a PCs graphics, disk, processor, video and CD-ROM subsystems in a
Windows environment. WinBench 97's tests are all 32-bit (except for a 16-bit processor
test) and can only run on Windows 95 and Windows NT systems. WinBench 97's new Graphics
Playback technology reproduces the graphics operations the Winstone 97 business and
high-end applications perform, affording you a better-than-ever measure of your PC's
graphics subsystem. Author: ZD Publishing Company |

Winhacker:
WinHacker 95 is a utility that you can use to configure the hidden Windows 95 (and Windows NT 4.0 with version 2.0) settings. WinHacker
95 is THE Windows Shell Management Tool. Many of the settings that change the way Windows
95 works and feels are hidden in the overwhelming registry, or in configuration files.
WinHacker 95 give you a easy way to configure those settings through the GUI (graphical
user interface)! So, it's just another TweakUI like program. (Wedge Software) |

Wintune 98: PC-Magazine benchmark program that tests CPU,
video, memory and harddisk very fast. Results can be compared graphically with a large
database. It also gives hints and tips how to fine-tune the win95 system. Very nice
program if you want to measure your systems performance very fast. Not as good as Winbench
though. New in this version is support for NT and W98 and a new, unfortunately, worse
interface. This program also crashes on my montster 3D card, which is very bad. Actually,
the entire program sucks in my opinion, Wintune 97 was much better! Author: CMP Media Inc. |
X-Setup: With
X-Setup your are able to control most of the hidden features of Windows. For example: Activate "Drag Full Windows" and "Font Smoothing" without installing Plus!; activate "Always unload DLLs";don't start CDs with AUTOSTART.INF; edit your Logoff-pictures; clear the Font-cache, Icon-cache... More than 55 functions are supported by X-Setup! Also the same sort of program as powertoy TweakUI. Author: K/oS |
