The D-form2 Project
16 May 2001, the last release is dated 7 July 2000. It's pretty a long time D-form is not being updated, for several reasons, not to mention my debugger won't run on the G4. In effect a 1.4.0a version existed but it was too buggy to release and without the debugger...
Now I recently installed MacOS X, which is something wonderful.
A true revolution, the bigger since PowerPC adoption.
The new OS is so sweet and promising (although it have to be optimized a little more in my opinion), and the developer tools provided in bundle are so nice that the asleep programmer inside my body start to arise... :)
So I started what I call "The D-form2 Project".
Such an important sounding name just to mean "a goofy attempt to create a Carbon version of the old buggy D-form".
You should agree with me that the former name is more concise... ;)
What this should mean?
Well, first of, that the 68k version of D-form is arrived at the end of his story. Until it was easy to provide a 68k version, just because the compiler allowed this, I had continued providing it.
But now, Carbon applications won't run on 68k.
And, come on, who uses 68k Macs today... OK, there are some up and running around but certainly not for rendering purpose, and D-form, after all, is a 3D graphics app.
The second thing is that I will take this occasion to do a complete rewriting of the app, because the original source code is pure crap right now (at least some part of it). It will not be an easy task. And it will take lot's of time.
Will D-form run under MacOS 8 and 9. Well... I hope to. But I can't ensure this. I have started studying MacOS X and Carbon just few days ago and, even some Carbon apps runs fine under 8 and 9 (as long as CarbonLib is provided), some other won't. I just don't know why this happens (I guess that the latter apps will use some X specific calls), and I will try to avoid this in D-form2, but I cannot guarantee.
It's not even sure that I will be able at all to produce a working Carbon version of D-form. But I want to try.
I will update this page with news on the ongoing porting, and I'm asking you all for help since now. I will need moral support, and people who will offer themselves as beta tester would be greatly appreciated.
What I ask is people who has a Macintosh with MacOS X installed, and that are aware of what is a HD backup. I won't be considered responsible if bugs eventually mess up your systems...
For those interested in beta testing my address is dkrota@mac.com
