Don’t ever buy from a disreputable breeder. Rather refrain from breeders that only advertise in the newspaper. There is over a 90% chance they are only trying to make money out of breeding. Consequently they often sell you sick cats, cats that go too young and aren’t registered. If you get a sick cat you may land up spending 1000’s of Rands on getting your kitty well again. Worse case is he / she may never get better. Or even worse… If the cat is too young then you land up with a cat that is not well-adjusted and unsocialised. The youngest kitten I ever got was 10 weeks and it was far too young. She never knew how to clean herself properly and was very nervous. She also skipped the litter box sometimes (gross). You are doing yourself and the kitty a very bad disservice. If the cat is unregistered you don’t know the cat’s background. From a pedigree you can tell if the kitty has a clean bloodline, anotherwords there were no strays involved in this cat’s history and also very importantly you will know if the cat has any genetic defects that may affect his or her health. Let your brain always over rule your heart when choosing a kitten.
Another thing is that you should always visit a cattery when choosing a kitten. First of all to see what conditions your kitten is born into. If the place is dirty and unkept move on and find someone else. But also to spend time with the parents. Remember personality is genetic and your kitty will have a very similar personality to one or both of the parents.
