William Hurt was born on May, the 20th 1950 in Washington D.C.
His first years he spent on journeys through the south-pacific, where his father was director of the Trust Territories.
When his parents got divorced, William Hurt settled to New York together with his mother and his two brothers.

Over holydays William visited his father at places like Guam, Somalia or Sudan.

William's mother married again 1960, when William was 10 years old. His stepfather, Henry Luce III, son of Time Inc.-founder, put him to a prep. school to Middlesex, where William felt wrong.

"I was a little punk," said William Hurt, "and suddenly I was at school with all the upper-class-kids from eastcoast. At that point it was a great shock in my life!"
