Over time, people who have not seen the anime or read the manga have been confused about Haruka or SailorUranus. As a matter of fact, she is one of those Outer Senshi that has been the subject of too many controversies. One of those controversies usually begin with the question: Is Haruka a lesbian or a man trapped in a woman's body?
Rumors have spread about this "Legend of Uranus" theory--which is only one of those "theories" about Uranus/Haruka that have been disseminated throughout cyberspace. It is in fact the most ridiculous lie that had spread like wildfire, and yet it is one of the most major deceitful piece of information ever to have plagued the internet.
This tall tale would begin with the Silver Millenium. Queen Beryl and Queen Metallia's forces have injured most of the Outer Senshi and have killed SailorUranus. Before SailorUranus died however, she was able to bequeath her powers over to her brother, the Prince of Uranus.
The "Prince of Uranus" was told to have been in love with the Princess of Neptune (SailorNeptune), and have been watching her beauty from afar. When he reincarnated as the female SailorUranus, it was understood that he would be in love with Neptune, and that he is supposedly a man trapped inside a female body. The rumors' reason why the "Prince" had to be reincarnated as a woman was because Sailor Senshi had to be women.*
Through the Eyes of an Avid Watcher
In her first manga appearance (volume 7), Haruka seemed to be portrayed as a man, complete with the flat chest and the strong jaw lines that characterized Takeuchi-san's male drawings. Her initial "fighting" form was that of a being who was quite similar to Tuxedo Kamen. In fact, when the two new Outer Senshi, SailorUranus and SailorNeptune appeared, Uranus was wearing a mask and a cape. It was only in the next act that she revealed her form as a Sailor Senshi.
In the anime, Haruka is quite masculine. Young women seem to throw themselves at her, especially when they have not yet been enlightened about Haruka's real gender--which is the case with Minako (SailorVenus) and Usagi (SailorMoon) when they first met Haruka.
But it's noticeable that even when some school girls know the truth, they still find her admirable. Makoto (SailorJupiter) even admired Haruka's manners and fashion sense. In both the anime and the manga, Mako sees Haruka as the perfect example of what she wants to be.
It's most probable that the reason for young women's attraction to Haruka even when they knew of her true gender is the fact that Haruka has this quiet strength that resembles that of the mythical Knight in Shining Armor. Her masculine charm lies in her brooding demeanor. This adds to the mystery and excitement that envelopes Haruka's personality. Thus, women are attracted to her like metal to a magnet.
There is no Prince of Uranus. There's only the Princess of Uranus, or the gifted genius Ten'ou Haruka, who has such a disturbingly thrilling quality about her that had caused tongues to wag and fingers to type astoundingly hilarious rumors about her.
