PBC Information

Ursodiol (ursodeoxycholic acid, or UDCA) is dosed for PBC by weight. Recommended dose is 13-15 mgs per kilogram of weight per day. Some patients are underdosed when UDCA is prescribed using dosage guidelines for gallstones.

Some patients are being dosed with higher amounts of UDCA than is documented in current guidelines. Documentation supporting higher dosing is hard to find. This link (Improved liver tests and greater biliary enrichment with high dose ursodeoxycholic acid in early stage primary biliary cirrhosis) points to a Pubmed abstract of an Italian study with high dose UDCA on early stage PBC patients.
