| ALOE VERA
![]() Aloe Vera (aloe vera), used since ancient times to treat burns, is used today for radiation bums resulting from cancer treatments, says Duke. Research supports these applications as well as use for wounds and frostbite. Scientists still don't know how the gel from the leaves of the aloe plant speeds healing, but it appears to have several beneficial effects: increasing the amount of blood flow brought to the site of the wound or bum, and enzymes that relieve pain and reduce swelling and redness. The gel also contains potent antibacterial and antifungal ingredients. While trekking in the woods, if your skin comes in contact with a poisonous plant, a dab of aloe would be soothing. Apply prepared aloe gel (available at most drugstores and natural food stores). If you are at home and have an aloe plant, slit a fresh leaf open and wipe its gel on the points of contact on your skin.
