Artist’s Statement
This submission is reflective of the
current focus in my work, the “Lightning Bolt”
series. This series concerns itself with several issues;
popular culture icons, archetypal images of the
collective unconscious, and the integration of modern
materials into the artworks. They utilize multiple
optical effects of reflection, refraction, and diffusion.
The symbol of the lightning bolt has been used
historically to represent power, electricity, speed, and
even godhood. The strong imagery and light interactive
materials are meant to complement the existing
connotations associated with these symbols. The usage of
modern materials is also a very important facet of the
work. While nearly every other thing in life has been
dramatically changed or altered by innovation and
technology, fine art & painting still reside in an
archaic pre-WW2 period. The injection of 20th century
materials is an attempt to put some new life into this
stagnant genre. Beyond all that, this is a playful and
bold series, referencing pop and flash art, with a deep
connection to popular culture. They present an overall
‘slick’ quality to themselves, resulting in
wonderful ‘eye-candy’.
