Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada. It is located on the East Coast of Canada, south and a little west of Newfoundland, and just north of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. If you're an American, we're talking about the area north of Maine. You know, the place Stephen King is from (Maine not Prince Edward Island).

The first thing to know about Prince Edward Island is that it's very crinkly. Slartibartfast would love it. Although it's not very long from tip to tip, Prince Edward Island (PEI to its friends) is so crinkly that it's been theorized that it has more coastline than non-coastline, althought to jury is still out on that one. As a result of its crinkliness, PEI has a LOT of beaches and ports, and therefore a lot of fisheries and a lot of tourists coming for the cheap seafood and sunny beaches.

Of course, lots of people come for Anne of Green Gables, a book written by PEI's premier dead authoress, Lucy Maude Montgomery. It is the story of a firey, artistic, sensitive redheaded girl named Anne forced to cope with some decidely none-of-the-above relatives and the usual trials and tribulations of growing up. It also takes place on Prince Edward Island. Somehow, the story of this spirited little white girl has become extremely popular in Japan, and a lot of the people coming to see the various Anne of Green Gables attractions are from Japan. Weird.

Another thing one must know (there's a quiz later) about Prince Edward Island is that it contains the richest soil in the world for growing potatoes. Potatoes are PEI's biggest export and biggest industry.
