MAYFIELDS opened in April 1999, and is owned and operated by Ken Quinn and his daughter Kate.  After operating the successful Rochester Castle Hotel in Johnston Street Fitzroy for over 6 years, Ken & Kate wanted a change from the "pub life" and sought to open a more specialised bar.

Vacant for over 18 months the premesis at 103 Smith Street Fitzroy became available for lease in February and Ken & Kate jumped at the opportunity to bring the space to life as their new venture.   Having already served as an entertainment space previously as Budinski's Theatre and The Flame Tree, it was even more exciting to bring it to a level it had never been before.

What they wanted with this new establishment was to combine all that was popular around Fitzroy and work those elements into the bar that is today - MAYFIELDS.

To stand out from other similar hospitality businesses at the busy "paris" end of Smith Street, Ken & Kate wanted to combine 3 elements that would make MAYFIELDS a great place to drink, eat and be entertained.  The idea of a bar - cafe - music club was born.  Added to this is the idea of an "art" space in the upstairs area of Mayfields with exhibitions, displays and performances.  Already plans are underway with a theatre performance during the 1999 Fringe Festival.

MAYFIELDSl it isn't just a venue where bands play.  Using the title 'music club', offers an atmosphere where music is a feature but not the focal point of the night.  Many nights at MAYFIELDS to date have people milling around the bar and dining from about 6 o'clock onwards and not just a crowd rolling up to see a band.

Many shows can be seen sitting at tables, as a dinner show package or just hanging out at the bar.

MAYFIELDS is already experiencing some great nights with acts like Bluehouse, Kerrie Simpson, Ross Hannaford, the Swinging Sidewalks, and recently Paul Kelly and Renee Geyer dropping by for an impromptu performance.
