These links are a collection of sites I frequent; they have all been personally found and verified (not simply borrowed off of an existing links page). I tend to favour sites that have have high graphics content (quantity and/or quality) and that are reliable and firmly established. The vast majority of these sites have been in existence reliably for at least 6 months, and many for over a year.

EarthStation1 - http://earthstation1.simplenet.com/homepage.html - Excellent picture and sound archive, updated often. Kind   of a museum of recent historical media. From WWII propaganda posters to TV themes. Also links to great share and freeware. Well worth the visit.

Tolkien's Oxford - http://users.ox.ac.uk/~tolksoc/TolkiensOxford/ - Photos of Oxford that feature places from Tolkien's life. Noteworthy because all the graphics come in three sizes - small, large, and holy-shit-that's-large.

WebMuseum, Paris - http://sunsite.unc.edu/wm/ - I believe this guy (Nicholas Pioch) used to refer to his site as a "Louvre" site until the museum bitched and he had to change the name. Frankly,  his site is much more comprehensive that the official Louvre site, anyway.

Shakespeare Illustrated http://www.cc.emory.edu/ENGLISH/classes/Shakespeare_Illustrated/Shakespeare.html - Paintings of Shakespearean scenes. Cool from an intersecting paradigm perspective, kind of "the brush meets the quill."

The Cabinet of Dr. Casey - http://www.drcasey.com/index.shtml - This is an excellent horror resource. Lotsa graphics, lotsa info, attractively designed. Spatter, splatter, gore, and more.

Earth from Space - http://earth.jsc.nasa.gov/categories.html - Satellite views, searchable by category or image map. Each image has a number of resolution choices, from thumbnail to mind-bogglingly big.

Hubble Space Telescope Public Pictures - http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/Pictures.html - The absolutely best HST picture resource. The latest images, thumbnails if you want 'em, categorized, different formats and resolutions.

Views of the Solar System - http://www.hawastsoc.org/solar/eng/homepage.htm - Very good educational resource with many images of and facts about our stellar neighborhood.


Oceanography on the Net - http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/dataserv/part2.html - This is part 2 of a larger resource. Pretty scientific, but has a fabulous selection of map links.

Infoseek - http://www.infoseek.com/ - Very useful! Can search the contents of newsgroup postings.

Lycos Pictures and Sounds - http://www.lycos.com/lycosmedia.html - I often use this when looking for a specific image.

Yahoo Image Surfer - http://isurf.yahoo.com/ - Another way to look for specific images. Not spectacular, but you can get lucky. Search results are in the form of thembnails, which is helpful.

Sympatico Newsgroup Search - http://www.bc.sympatico.ca/cgi-bin/searchnews.pl?keyword= - Looking for a specific newsgroup but don't know what it's called? This site searches the names of newsgroups.

Clip Art Searcher - http://www.webplaces.com/search/#lycos - Gives links to clip-art areas of HotBot, Lycos, Filez, and 1-Click. Handy. (But not currently working, it would seem)
