The Story of Maui

Put Some Perspective on the Pics...

Once Upon A Time...

Sunday the 12th of March

The Wetzel Family boarded a plane in New York after a wonderful nights rest in the city that never sleeps (I guess THAT makes no sense!!!) Our flight lifted off from JFK Airport at 8:30 a.m. and proceeded on to L.A., where we had a fabulous layover. Already the sun and heat were warming our spirits as we prepared for the beauty that awaited us in Maui. We boarded another plane eventhally that took us to Honolulu and after a short layover there we took one more 20 min jaunt to the Most Beautiful Island in the world...MAUI.
That evening was spent...well...pretty much in bed, seeing as we had been traveling all day. But we did take a tour of the hotel, locating the pool and beach (see pics).

Monday the 13th

After an incredible night of rest we awoke to the sounds of birds chirping. Our room had an incredible view of a construction site, with the beach and waterfront off in the background...okay, so the construction wasn't THAT bad, and hey it was MAUI...did I mention that part yet...we're on MAUI !!!
We took to the unbelievable Kapalua Beach and found ourselves a cozy little spot in the sand. After some relaxing in the intense Pacific sun, we opted to swim a bit. When that got boring, we rented some snorkel equiptment and did a bit of fish watching...they were beautiful, colorful and some were WICKED LARGE!!!
That Evening I got in touch with a friend from Conn, Liz, and she drove over to the hotel and took me out for a night on the town. We went into Lahaina and viewed the art galleries, restaurants (of which there are many) and made fun of some woman singing terrible songs at Cheeseburger In Paradise (who claim to have the REAL burger, straight from Jimmy!
Later that evening Liz convinced me to take her back to the hotel so she could indulge in the hot tub/spa. So we did. It was the perfect evening to my first full day on MAUI...

Tuesday 14th

Waking up relatively early again due to the wonderful construction (more due to not wanting to WASTE time on Maui) Liz and I made a head start on the day heading out in her lovely Jeep to explore parts of the island. We got a quick breakfast at McDonalds where there was a man wearing No Shoes and No Shirt. I really thought I was going to see a sign somewhere that said, "No Shirt, No Shoes...NO PROBLEM!" But I didn't.
So Liz and I planned on touring the island in her Jeep. After a successful removal of the hard top of the Jeep we packed light, lathered on the sun-screen and headed off.
We ended up driving for over six hours that day. Now that may not SEEM like much, but on an island, it basically meant that we circumnavigated the entire island of Maui. We took a jaunt on the infamous Hana Highway, stopped off at the Seven Sacred Pools (although there are no longer seven nor are they sacred...) and pretty much just had a blast rocking out to tunes and catching up on old times.
Liz and I had only really known eachother for about a collective month before this trip, but we still had a great time hanging out and sharing stories.
That night ended with Liz and I hitting a light dinner in Lahaina (the best restaurant selection on the island) and then my going home for a nights rest. I didn't want to be sleepy for the next day...WHALE WATCHING!!!

To Be Continued...

But wasn't that a long time ago that I wrote To Be Continued...perhaps I owe it to you hardcore fans to continue the story. If only I could remember.
Wedensday 15th Well, if it's Wed then it must be whale watching day. We signed up for an early morning tour, because God knows that was all we could get. The boat was nothing short of a Navy Seals raft, fitted with a sun screen for our beet red driver. But he knew what he was doing. Once we had all removed our shoes and donned our SPF 50 we set sail. We found whales almost immediately. There were mothers and calfs and also a few escort whales. They were beautiful. Not many came close to our small craft, but if they did we would have been toppled. Dolphins were next, and technically they too are whales. They were also magnificant. Swimming right up in front of the boat they teased everyone with a camera, vying for the close up but not giving it up. What a bunch of show boaters...he he he.
