Warning! This page contains spoilers. At least a little bit. But read anyway, it's interesting.

SLD is kind of a strange thing. It started with one fanfic, which somehow streched into rather oversized proportions, becoming The Chosen, what would later be known as the first volume of Shades of Light and Darkness. After The Chosen was out for a while, several people expressed interest in writing stories based on it, and while The Chosen: Resurrection was being worked on by one person, a different type of story took shape, but no form, in the mind of another. Meanwhile, a second volume was added to Shades of Light and Darkness, completing the pair.

After much struggling with getting the various fanfics up on web sites everywhere (a challenging job, since the stories are large and most sites have space constraints, I decided that a web site was needed to house everything and let people just link to it. Hence, this site.

Now, some information on the actual fanfics. Note that links to your left will take you to such things as fanart and information on the people behind SLD.

Shades of Light and Darkness is the original that started everything.

The Chosen: Resurrection is Kenneth Krekeler's continuation of The Chosen.

And then there is Albert Vest's story, which is somewhat of a mystery.

Shades of Light and Darkness

by David Kogan

This is the original, so to speak. Started in May of 1996 and finished in July 1997, so it took fourteen months to come out in entirety, although I skipped half a year in between the volumes. This is the fanfic that won me the Author of the Month award (shameless plug.. doh), and it is the fanfic you should read first. It develops the various characters and plotlines of the series, and any and all other fanfics written in SLD will almost certainly agree to the facts described here.

As stated, it is lengthy. Two volumes, seven parts, somewhat over 1.75 megabytes of text and more words than I care to count, even if the counting is automatic. Instead of trying to describe it all at once, I will take each volume separately, and give you a sort of sneak preview of what you will read.

Volume I: The Chosen

A shape comes out of darkness, dragging millenia of the mast back into the sun. It is a history that perhaps should have been left forgotten as the scouts try to figure out just whose side the new warrior is on. He seems to not be unfriendly, but he obviously has his own agenda. Then again, so does everyone else, even a former ruler of the Negaverse, a four-armed general who comes in to save a Sailor S-.. But let's not get carried away.

As the scouts try to figure out just what is going on, the confrontation grows near. The warrior talks with his guide, Raye trusts no one, Amy and Lita are only a little more hopeful and Mina.. Mina can't seem to decide whether she wants to kill him or find a convenient ditch. At least Serena is still Serena.

Then again, Raye seems to have a point - he made the choice between his life and the good of the Universe before, the decision one of the causes of the end of the Silver Millenium. Queen Serenity may have forgiven him, but he never could, and he spent a millenium in preperation for battle. No matter what the scouts think, they do not seem to have the power to stop the rage that drives him; he knows he will give up his life and love to save the world, as the Chosen before him had. As he had failed to do once.

But at least some of the scouts diagree with his ethics, with his ideas of honor and justice. Will they stop him? Will they help? And why would the former leader of the Negaverse save Mina's life? While we are at it, why would someone on the Sailor Scout's side spare an enemy like Jadeite? And what is Jadeite doing in a fanfic that takes place after the Doom Tree battle?

Oh.. and that's just the first two parts. They make a complete story in and of themselves, so you will have the option of stopping there. If you can.

Because then comes part three. Part three is interesting. Really. It has a Knight in shining armor. Then he tries to kill everyone. And then there's the thing that goes really fast.

And the ending is not what you will expect.

Then again, in real life, is it ever?

Volume II: Perchance to Dream

A year has passed and the fight is over, or so it would seem. Peace once more governs the blue-green planet.

But as the sun rises and falls, the pressures of dark and light build up in the heart of one warrior, and the darkness is released in a nightmare creature that prowls the streets of Tokey. As the the Scouts' powers are lost to a bitter force, when all the city thinks that the heroes are not what they seem, when two of the scouts are imprisoned, successfully, by the police, what choice will have to be made to save the Universe, and what will be the price?

What can the Scouts do without their powers? What can they do without love?

And what (aside from the obvious) posesses someone to push Serena out of an airplane?

The tasks of ware are gone and dust
Farmers return to work of old
Then swords are put away at last
The hot of blood on blades grows cold.

A sword forged in hell's dark flames
Can never find the light of peace
A blade that once on humans prayed
Sleeps old death's dreams to be at ease.

The Chosen: Resurrection

by Kenneth Krekeler

Kenneth's continuation, now revised and being worked upon once more, was started before volume two of Shades of Light and Darkness came out, so his story is a continuation of The Chosen, and takes a somewhat different turn than the events described in Perchance to Dream. The story is unfinished, but five parts have been written so far. I highly recommend reading The Chosen before reading this fanfic. I am not the author, and the story is not finished, so I'll keep the teasers to the minimum and let the story speak for itself:

It seems that Kaneth is not the only candidate for ruler of the Negaverse. When Calamite steps up to the throne, the unverse of the scouts is thrown into chaos once more as they find themselves facing a foe from a time they thought they could finally forget, from a life they did not wish to relive again.

And when the scouts realize that two people can not live in the same body, two minds are too much for one person, then once again, a crisis threatens everything. To fight, or to hope-

The answer is never easy.

Title Unknown

by Albert Vest

Unfortunately, this has been put on hold indefinitely. Very little was known about this fanfic in the first place, but it was meant to keep the storyline of SLD intact and fill in the gaps between the two volumes of Shades of Light and Darkness.

The only other information is the .5th draft I was sent, and a very sketchy summary, one which has undoubtlably since become innacurate. Perhaps if you contacted Albert, he might get back to writing.

And if he tells you something about the fanfic, please tell me, because I know almost nothing.

Those three are the only fanfics that I know about. If you would like to add your own talent in either writing or art to the universe, please visit the contact page for more information.
