James X. Nova

Artist Bio

James X. Nova, the scion of Midwestern worm ranchers, grew up in Texas, after moving there at the age of 26. A slow child, he was unable to tell time, tie his shoes, or distinguish left from right and was sent to a school for the mentally retarded. Despite, or perhaps because of his intellectual limitations, he was accepted into Mensa and metriculated to Columbia University. Mr. Nova moved to New York in 1992 to be close to the art that he loves: Grant's Tomb and the Canal street plastic wholesalers. He describes his genre as "PoBoy." Mr. Nova's primary media are assemblage, collage, and computer art. His "combobs," as he calls his assemblages, are made from local pre-existing materials, either found, or at least, available at discount prices. Most of his works are text-driven, but from the back seat, often requiring hours and even days of contemplation to decipher. A licenced minister, he holds the title of abbot in the X-christian Church. His interests are technomorphism and condestructionism. Today he wears a digital watch and loafers and refuses to say the pledge of allegiance, but mainly for political reasons.
