When we prepared a cover story on the anthrax mailings, the editor/writer didn't know what kind of image to use on the front. We had an photo of a letter mailed to a Congressman and wanted to recreate what it might look like when received. I came up with the headline before we tackled the cover photo. To all you potential paper employees: a skill with puns can save your butt when it comes time to work on headlines. I copied the envelope in pen, took the photo with powder, added postage marks recreated in Illustrator, and applied them in Photoshop with slight blur and contrast effects. This is a cover of which I remain especially proud. Simple image, snappy headline.
