I was able to bamboozle the editors to let me do some illustration work for the county daily while working as a copy editor. When the annual South Carolina Press Association award nominations came due in 1999, I was asked at virtually the last minute to submit art work for consideration. When I won the award (and awoke after the shock) I was sure the union of illustrators was gonna put out a hit on that no-good copy editor who stumbled onyo their playing field. So I hid the award in a box and smothered it in concrete and buried it under a septic tank. But I put a webcam in the box first so I can look at it every once in a while.

I got a job at a weekly alternative paper as a graphic artist,
producing covers and spot illustrations as needed. I also designed ads
and layouts. The folks at the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies
gave me two awards for illustration and cover design in 2002 and 2003,
respectively.
