The idea for using the Iwo Jima image came early on in the brainstorming sesions. I copied the image in Illustrator and simplified the bodies into blocks of color. The various media items and logos were also made in Illustrator and collaged for the best layout. The flag was copied from an image of Old Glory, and the text was added and textured in Illustrator as well. I really wish we hadn't added the subhed; it dilutes the impact of the cover. I think you can gain just as many readers, if not more, if they have to pick up a copy to find out to what a cover image may refer. Speaking also as the paper's art robot, the subhed just kills the power of the image.

We got a latter from a retired Marine who took great offense at the cover and claimed to represent hundreds of others. He was mad not because we used the Iwo Jima image, but because we gave it what he called "communist colors." He demanded an apology. He's still waiting for it.
