If the ancient Egyptians were so civilized... how come they drew all over their walls?!

Dear M.,
Haha! Funny! But you know, let’s
be glad they did choose to draw on pyramid walls because they’ve lasted
over the centuries haven’t they? They managed to preserve their history
in a way no other civilization had before. It’s interesting how the pyramid
drawings got started. Apparently during a final inspection of the first
step pyramid a worker accidentally jabbed one of the oxen attached to a
sledge standing nearby with his copper chisel. The oxen reared and damaged
the wall. This prompted some quick thinking by the architect Imhotep to
“fix” the problem by chiseling out a story on the wall. The arms of the
woman only seemed to fit in an odd bent fashion, and were used henceforth
that way. Granted, in order to cover all the damage that first panel is
said to read, “Pharaoh Djoser stands on birds, has a snake growing out
his forehead and races flying fish.” Never the less most of the common
people accepted it as fact and the rest of the story seemed to cause less
confusion.
