Mexico After the Spanish Conquest 1521

Hispanic Cultures Directory

Spain's 16th century arrival abruptly ended Indian achievement as most of their existing civilizations were destroyed. The Spanish Conquest ushered in a 300-year period during which ecclesiastical architecture predominated, often imitating prevailing European trends, one of which is the bullfight. Basic modern corrida form was created by Joaquin Roderiguez Costillares, an early Matador born in Sevilla in 1729, inventor of the basic cape pass, the Veronica. Plazas throughout Mexico split the season in two - one for Matadors (graduated bullfighters) and one for novilleros (upcoming professionals) making use of the ring for most of the year. The Matador season is October to March.

Mexico was ruled as a dictatorship by Porfirio Diaz, a former general under Juarez. The 1910 Revolution was precipitated by growing opposition to Diaz. Factions led by Pancho Villa, Emilio Zapata and others split the country. A new Constitution was adopted in 1917 establishing a democratic government system composed of legistlature, executive and judiciary. Following the assassinations of President Venustiano Carranza and reformist Zapata, political storms continued. With the 1934 election of General Lazaro Cardenas a fruitful reconstruction period began. Cardenas broke up huge land holdings, redistributing them into small cooperative farms (ejidos) making Zapata's dream of returning Mexican land to the people a reality.
