World Cultures Directory
Several Vietnamese websites discuss Viet Nam's history, geography and culture, showing Viet Nam's land and people, places and things important in Viet Nam, mostly for American audiences. Other Asian countries maintain similar pages, examples being Chinaweb and Asia Online, whose Viet Nam section has maps showing Hanoi's historic buildings and Old Town Market, translating the 36 Streets' names of merchandise sold on that street. These Viet Nam pages are the ones best known to me: Destination Viet Nam: monthly e-zine featuring National Geographic-style articles and photo essays of Viet Nam contributed by people visiting Viet Nam as tourists, students or business executives. Regular departments featuring Vietnamese art, literature and restaurant reviews. Features on business and technology investment in Viet Nam and stories about businessmen's visits to Viet Nam.

Viet Touch: Viet Nam's history and culture. Its timeline takes us from Viet Nam's prehistory - 300,000 years ago when primitive tribes inhabited Viet Nam - through the first discovery of agriculture and pottery to the bronze age to early Vietnamese scholars to India's influence to centuries of Chinese domination to French colonization to the present day. Sections of this site involve Vietnamese coins, stamps, architecture, history, literature, music and art. Viet Touch's Viet Nam history section shows Viet Nam's Trung sisters' short-lived rebellion 36 A D - 41 A D, still maintaining myths of the elder Trung sister's husband's murder. Actually he was still alive, myths of his death created by Chinese revisionists not liking women as leaders. This site is mostly in English with parts of it in Vietnamese. Viet Scape, based in San Jose California, bilingually deals with Vietnamese geography and contemporary, local Vietnamese dining and entertainment. Its Landscapes Viet Nam section takes us on photo tours of Saigon, Hanoi, Phan Thiet, Nha Trang, Da Lat and other Vietnamese cities, the Perfume Pagoda, the Mekong Delta and indigenious Vietnamese fruits. Viet Touch also has extensive material regarding Vietnamese concerts and music, mostly in San Jose. Vietnamese CD releases are listed along with Vietnamese singer biographies. There's photos of Vietnamese concerts and Tet festival queens and courts. Vietnamese music stores and Vietnamese restaurants are listed. There's a Vietnamese MIDI section for those whose computers have sound. Included are oldies and dance tunes popular in Viet Nam during the 1960s and 1970s and still popular today, and Vietnamese songs. Users without sound can still view the lyrics to most of these MIDIs (Vietnamese song lyrics are given in Vietnamese) Chat forums discuss Vietnamese entertainment, poetry, relationships and computer technology. Unlike the Vietnamese Poetry section, the chat rooms are in English.
