I know, I know. Maria and Lucia Callasantos, known as Feral (X-Force) and Thorn
(Morlocks) aren’t the most popular characters in the X-universe. In fact, they’re so
non-essential that even now nobody knows or cares where they are. But therein lies
something I love about the X-Men series. Eventually almost any character, no matter how
small, will come out of the background and show another side of their 3D personalities. Fabian Nicieza took us on a dark trip into the minds of two angry and frightened young sisters. They came from a poor family living in the South Bronx. There was a dead beat father, a mother on the brink of insanity, two daughters with mutant powers that made them half feline, a boy, and a baby girl. This was a family so dysfuntional it turned on itself, created murderous rage from its members, and left itself open to any dangers, including one named Harry, a “cokehead, a drunk,” and a child molestor. In the course of this two part mystery, we learn how Harry and three members of the family died. There aren’t any excuses made for murder, but we learn about the insanity that motivated the crimes. To me, this was a dramatic way of showing the protection, the security--both financial and emotional--a father can bring to a family when he does it right. And when he doesn’t, in some cases, “murder and mayhem” really does happen. |
