IF YOU WANT TO REPRINT AN ARTICLE...

I allow almost unlimited reprinting of articles for non-commercial purposes, provided the work is reprinted in full, without changes, and is accompanied by my copyright statement.

Most people have been courteous and scrupulous about respecting my author's rights. (Thank you.) However, a few have abused or...well, shall we say...stretched...the copyright conditions.

So as of June 5, 1998 the following statement will be attached to all articles written by me and posted to this web site:

© 1998 Claire Wolfe. This article may be reprinted for non-commercial purposes, as long as it is reprinted in full with no content changes whatsoever, and is accompanied by this credit line. The article may not be re-titled, edited or excerpted (beyond the limits of the fair use doctrine) without the written permission of the author. For-profit publications will be expected to pay a nominal reprint fee.

Well-meaning people have occasionally decided to give my articles new titles. The very confusing result has been that some articles are circulating under at least five different names, and I have the awful feeling readers imagine I'm trying to pawn off old stuff under new headings. Not so. I realized this practice had to stop when I began getting reprint requests for articles I'd never heard of, but somehow were still my own work!

In one case, some Nazi altered one of my essays to suit his prejudices.

Also, a very definitely for-profit magazine recently picked up bits of several of my articles and reran them without permission, without pay, without even a courtesy note to me, and without respect for the terms of my copyright. Yeah, they also retitled them. Wow! R-U-U-U-D-E! I was Not Happy.

If you run a for-profit publication, rest assured I'll cooperate with your needs to the best of my ability. If your publication is small, as so many are, I'll waive the reprint fee. My main concern is courtesy -- and reminding a few careless souls that it just isn't kosher to take someone elses' work and make it their own.

Though you may not change the words, you may naturally change the formatting in any way you need for your web site or publication. Other authors whose work appears on Wolfe's Lodge may have different reprint requirements. When in doubt, just ask!

Finally, I don't require non-commercial users to get permission to reprint, but it's always nice to hear about reprint plans. I'm not merely gratified, but sometimes enlightened. Just this morning, for instance, I got a note from a fellow writer that said, "Loved your March piece in Publication X. Totally agree." But I'd never heard of Publication X and had no idea at all what my "March piece" might have been. So help me out; let me know. And you commercial users, you always ask, okay?

Thanks for your interest. Thanks for caring.
