What is Wicca?

1. People come into the craft thinking that it's all spell-casting: it's not. Wicca is a religion, which means it has it's own dieties and belief systems. For solitairy wiccans these rules and systems are pretty diverse, because the solitaire's religion is made by the individual, to fit the individual.
2.But the one rule that should be followed by all wiccans (because, essentially, wicca is white-- & occasionally grey magick only) is the wiccan rede:

It means: don't do anything (cast spells ect.) that would harm, or control another person (or yourself).
I suppose you wouldn't have to follow the rede, but it is wiser to follow it, to see why, keep reading.
Basic laws that stem from this are: Wiccan Laws of Power
by Scott Cunningham
1. The Power shall not be used to bring harm, to injure or conrol others. But if the need arises, the Power shall be used to protect your life or the lives of others.
2.The Power is used only as need dictates.
3.The Power can be used for your own gain, as long as by doing so you harm none.
4.It is unwise to accept money for the use of the Power, for it quickly controls its taker. Be not as those of other religions.
5.Use not the Power for prideful gain, for such cheapens the mysteries of Wicca and magic.
6. Ever remember that the Power is the sacred gift of the Goddess and the God, and should never be misused or abused.
This goes along with the "Law of three, threefold law" which is related to Karma. It states that anything done to another, will come back three times fold. So doing white magick is actually beneficial to you. Doing black magick can cause the spell to backfire on you threefold, and has many retributions.

3. Wicca is an Earth religion, so we revere all of the earth, and it's creatures. Even when we take a branch from a tree, the tree must be thanked for it's sacrifice.
4.The Goddess and the God are the dieties of Wicca. Although Wicca is based apon Both the Goddess and the God (The Goddesss being represented in the Earth itself,& the moon, and the God being the one who fertilizes it, and the Sun), hundereds of years of Patriarchy on the Church’s behalf, has turned many to see the Goddess as more powerful (half out of spite). I myself fall prey to this, and still work to commune equally with both.
The Goddess and the God are constantly in cycle with the seasons, being young, adults, old, dying, and then being reborn.
The Goddess has three aspects (again, more is known about the Goddess, and many of the aspects of the God, have been lost to time)
The Maiden, The Mother, and The Crone.
In the winter, she is barren, and thus the Crone, the old God is dead, and she mourns. During the Winter around Christmas (Our holiday is called "Yule"), she gives birth to the God, thus becoming the Mother. In the spring she is the Maiden, and she and the young God court. In the Summer they marry, and in the fall, she becomes pregnant with the God’s child, he grows old and dies (at Halloween, which is another major holiday called "Samhain" pronounce : Sow-in), and the whole cycle begins again.
Our religion is centered around the Goddess and the God, the Earth and it’s creatures, and the seasons.
The lesser, you could say, is involved with magick.
6. People that just cast spells, aren't Wiccans. Being a wiccan means celebrating the festivals, following the rules the best you can, and working with the Lord and Lady (Goddess and God). Someone can be a witch and not be a Wiccan, and if that is how you want to be--at least you'll be well informed!
7. The more I am involved in Wicca, the more I see the different types of Witches. To be a witch, you don't have to be Wiccan and worship the Goddess and God! There are many who even practice a type of Catholic Witchcraft, which involves invoking different Angels! So again, do your research, and find what's best for you.
and happy hunting!
