What I've been doing. (past)

Hi! I'm name is Randy and I'm originally from Honolulu, Hawaii (born and raised, I'm so lucky)

EDUCATION

I went to Punahou High School and was fortunate to be exposed to an excellent art education very young. I had classes in printmaking, drawing, painting, ceramics, and even glassblowing. I went on to spent time at Biola University in Southern California finishing up at California State University Fullerton. At CSUF I studied under John Stoksberry and Jerry Rothman. Other studies included a year with Gifford Myers at University California at Irvine, and a summer session at Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles with Ed O'Reilly and Ralph Baccerra.

SOME WORK

In between I worked at several Potterys and the Pottery Shack in Laguna Beach doing wheelthrowing demos for the tourists.

STUDIOS

I've always had studios in Santa Ana California. My first studio in 1987 was in an old Advertising Arts (Engravers) School. It was 500 square feet of my very own with a window that looked out onto the bums and the railroad tracks. Next I shared a studio in an industrial space with several other ceramic artists (Susie Ketchum, David Ames both from Kansas City Art Institute; David and Denise Ford, and several others who came and went). My next studio was on Santiago street in Santa Ana in another industrial space where I stayed for 5 years. I've been in my studio on Santa Ana Blvd. (just three blocks down from my old studio) for about 13 years and I love it. The present studio is about 2000 square feet all to myself where I have a display area up in the front and lots of work space.

Most recently I have had to move out of my studio and put everything in storage. Well the developers finally gave my landlord an offer he couldn't refuse. I have spent the later part of 2007 moving and although it has been long and hard it has forced me to reevaluate what I am doing. I am still committed to my artistic career and the flyingcupclay business. I am excited to see what new opportunities come my way in the coming years. There are several prospects of work space and I am anxious to get back to studio work. I presently have a great job at the Orange County High School of the Arts.

SOME DOINGS

I've been involved in helping establish an Artists Village area in the downtown of Santa Ana.
We have Open House events every First Saturday of the Month from 7-10 PM.

Presently I am a ceramics teacher at the Orange County High School of the Arts here in Santa Ana California. I work with great people (thanks Paige Oden for making the call) and great gifted, passionate, inspiring, exceptional kids!

SHOWS

Flying Cup Clay studio has been in existence since 1987 and I have been a full-time studio artist since 1992. I show in several galleries across the nation. The present "vegetable series" that I have been working on was awarded a Gold Medal in the "Discovery Award 1993" for Craft in California. It has also been invited to exhibit at the prestigious "DinnerWorks" show with the Louisville Kentucky Visual Arts Association; seen at the "New Artist Tea Party" show at the Ferin Gallery in Northampton, Massachusetts; “Pacific Craft Show” at the Orange County Museum of Art; and recently featured on the Carol Duvall Show for Home and Garden TV.

Shows I've been in include a traveling show of Southern California ceramics at the Taiwan Taipei Cultural Center; “Tea and Fantasy” show at the Alianza Gallery in Boston; a featured artist exhibition at the Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, California; and was an invited artist at the Orange County Fair in 2002.
