DEEP BLUE SEA
Three big pissed off genetically altered sharks terrorize the humans that hold them captive as lab experiments in Deep Blue Sea. This monster/action film was wonderfully directed by Renny Harlin, who hasn't helmed a horror film since the dreadful Nightmare on Elm Street 4. But he's back to show us all he's learned a few things since then. What pushes this film from a simple action-packed Jurassic Park wannabe is the graphic nature of the shark attacks. Frankly, they left me rather shaken and disturbed. Very grim stuff for a summertime fun flick, I'd have to say. What helps this along is the fact that, for the most part, the film's characters are likable folk. Watching them die in such a manner isn't easy to take.
I recently picked up the DVD and even though I've only watched the film, I'd have to say this is one of the best I've got so far. What's up for me to view is a behind-the-scenes documentary and a special-effects documentary. There's a feature-length audio commentary by both Samuel L. Jackson and Renny Harlin. Also, there's some deleted scenes with an optional commentary by Harlin (note: if renting or buying the DVD without seeing the film first, you should wait until after the movie is done before checking out the deleted scenes with the commentary track. Harlin gives some plot spoilers away).
