In Episode 41, Joe visits Victoria and Benjamin, who are none too happy to
see him. He tries to borrow money, so he can go retrieve Olivia and Joey from
England, but they refuse. Later, at Belleterre, John Henry enters a room to see
Elizabeth just in time to see Joe leave. Elizabeth defends Joe and supports his
decision to go to England. They have an argument regarding Olivia's future, John
Henry planning to support her if she leaves Joe and Elizabeth claiming that Olivia
and Joe are husband and wife no matter what. John Henry leaves in a huff for Will's.
In England, Grace and Carey arrive at a Marshall vacation home in the Lake District
and Carey introduces Grace to her "fellows," five young men she considers brothers.
The next day, John Henry goes to desperate measures. With Will's help, he has
Elizabeth believe the he is having an affair with Marietta, forcing her to reconsider
her position on the topic of male fidelity. Elizabeth, not realizing the trick, prepares
to go stay with Victoria. A short time later, Joe returns to his brother's house to
announce that he has obtained the funds to travel to England.
In Episode 42, John Henry tries to convince Elizabeth not to go. She leaves
anyway, and John Henry decides to let her get really mad before going after her. At
Marshall House, where Carey and Grace are staying, some of Carey's fellows
practice shooting at clay pidgeons. Grace, feeling sorry for Paul, who hasn't hit one,
takes a shot with her own pistol just as he does with his rifle and gets him his first
shot. Scotty, however, sees her do it. He does not expose her, but instead forces her
into an improptu shooting competition. If she wins, he becomes her servant for a
week. If he wins, he gets to "have his way" with Carey. Grace wins by far.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth arrives at Victoria's house and reluctantly tells her daughter
what John Henry has done. John Henry soon arrives, but Elizabeth refuses to speak
with him. Victoria tries to send him away, but he forces his way inside. Will and
Marietta have come, as well, and Will is soon called to explain things. A short time
later, all seems well until Elizabeth confesses she gave Joe the money to go to
England. John Henry gets angry and leaves. The night, Madison has a nightmare.
While she was still in mourning for her father, Jonathan beat her.
In Episode 43, Grace surprises Scotty by wearing trousers when he has
prepared her horse (for her morning ride) with a sidesaddle. In Liberty Creek,
Madison reluctantly allows Jack to walk her home. The next morning, at the Elliot
house, Philip sticks his foot in his mouth when the discussion turns to Olivia, Joe,
John Henry, Elizabeth, and who was right. Libbie kicks him out. In England, Carey
and Grace attend a party at a neighbor's house. They discover that Frank, one of
Carey's "fellows" and a minister, has become engaged. Later, Paul graciously asks
Grace to dance after noticing she hasn't been doing so. At Belleterre, Elizabeth
returns home to find John Henry has left. She badgers the butler until he reveals
John Henry has gone to his hunting cabin. Elizabeth starts to ride up to meet him.
She meets Nick just before starting up the mountain, but he fails to convince her not
to try the trek. At Marshall House, Grace and Scotty have an archery match. They are
even until Grace purposely misses her last shot upon receiving Scotty's word that he
wouldn't actually force himself on Carey. When Scotty has won, he carries Carey off.

through the secluded path, she is attacked.

disturbs them. A telegram has arrived from Stancliff and Olivia's baby is coming
early. Grace has already prepared to leave and Carey is just in time to see her run
towards the stables. That night, in Liberty Creek, Madison begins packing a bad to
leave, but changes her mind. While looking at a scar on her neck, she swears
Jonathan will never hurt anyone again. Carey arrives at Stancliff some time after
Grace, but the baby still has not arrived. The next day, in Liberty Creek, Lazarus and

she loves him. Madison talks to Sally about her relationship with Jonathan, then
reveals that he once tried to kill her. Sally tries to convince Madison to take legal
action against him. Grace secrets Joey into Olivia's bedroom. When he leaves, Grace
tells Olivia about the bet she and Carey lost to Scotty. Olivia also reveals that her
feelings toward Stuart have changed, but Grace is still not as understanding. Several
days later, in Liberty Creek, Madison, Lazarus, Sally, and Jack leave for Jonathan's
trial in Boise. Prospects do not look good.
In Episode 46, Philip finally returns home from his exile. He gets a chance
to talk with Lydia first, who reveals that Libbie's entire plan was to have Philip
"notice" her again. It works. Libbie and Philip head for a private, romantic retreat for
a few hours. In San Francisco, a five-months pregnant Georgie, along with Stuart
and Gabe, meet with prospective parents for Stuart's baby. After saying some
derogatory things about Mexicans and prostitutes, the Horners are very quickly ruled
out. In England, Grace has tea with Paul Moody. She finds herself comfortable
enough to tell him the entire story about Stuart. He tells her he suspects she started
something between Carey and Scotty. In Boise, Lazarus tells Jack that the judge in
Jonathan's trial is a drunkard and a wife beater–in other words, Madison has no
chance. Some time later, Madison reacts quite wildly upon hearing the verdict of not
guilty. At Stancliff, Grace goes to visit Olivia only to find that Faith has died.
In Episode 47, Madison is safe for the moment. Jonathan returns East. She
finds a mysterious yet comforting note in her hotel bedroom, though. She suggests to
Sally that they conduct a séance to discover who wrote it. At Stancliff, the mourners
gather for Faith's funeral. Joe appears just after her coffin is lowered into the ground.
Olivia's rage soon turns to defeat. In Boise, Sally reluctantly agrees to the séance.
The ceremony results in a vision that both Madison and Sally are able to see. When
Madison was very young, she had a brother, Cole, taken quite traumatically from
their home. Joe and Olivia talk, and Olivia decides that she will try to fix things if
Joe agrees to the same. In Liberty Creek, Lydia goes into labor.
In Episode 48, Madison and company return home. Madison agrees to sup
with the Carrols. The Marshalls gather to wait as Lydia remains in labor. Elizabeth
talks for the first time about her pregnancies. Just after Christopher is told that he
has a daughter, John Henry receives a telegram revealing that he has lost a
granddaughter. He does not let Christopher know. As Madison walks home from
dinner, she literally bumps into a stranger. The stranger turns out to be her brother.
Nick bids goodbye to Tess as she leaves for San Francisco. In England, Olivia and
Joe leave for home.
In Episode 49, Madison walks with Cole. Madison flashes back to the time
Cole first revealed his presence to her. Cole had been sent away to boarding school
when his nurse convinced his parents that he was a bad influence. They hug, and
Jack sees this. Not knowing who Cole is, he moves to protect Madison. Cole ends up
punching him several times before Madison can call him off. Christopher and Lydia
are discussing baby names when John Henry visits to tell them about Olivia and
Faith. To honor his sister, Christopher names his baby Olivia. Jack, in bad need of
stitches, makes his way to Belleterre. He has heard of Louisa's experience and asks
her to take care of his wounds. When she is finished, Jack notices her artwork and
insists upon looking at more. He convinces her to let him send a few select pieces to
a friend of his father's at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In England, Carey

engaged. Tess arrives in San Francisco. In her surprise at Georgie's pregnancy, she
admits her own.

his grandmother and inadvertantly mentions that he saw Madison with a strange
man. Stuart's baby girl, though early, appears to have no health problems. She had
sent for a priest before the birth, however, thinking her baby might die. She plans to
name it Carolina (after her mother) Theresa Georgina. She also plans to keep her. In
Liberty Creek, Jack attempts to apologize to Madison but is not forgiving. He
discovers, though, that Cole is her brother. Cole introduces himself as Cole Branden,
explaining that he took his mother's maiden name. After Jack leaves, Madison tells
Cole that their mother's maiden name was Bourgeau. He knew that. On a ship, Olivia
and Joe talk. Olivia tells him that she and Joey will be staying at Belleterre without
him. Joe then confesses that he lost all his money on his business trip. Olivia informs
him that he cannot touch her dowry, that the money is for Joey and any other
children they might have. Joe, angry, leaves her alone on the deck of the ship.
