North Park is sorta like a small town right in the middle of a fairly large city (San Diego). It is not a very progressive place and therein lies both its charm and its inherent ugliness. I guess that up until the 1950s and the advent of the shopping mall, North Park was the shopping mecca of San Diego. All of the major department stores were represented and when the first electric traffic lights were installed in San Diego, North Park's main intersection was among the first six intersections to receive this modern amenity. It still is a shopper's haven in a way, except all the department stores are long gone now, replaced by countless 99¢ stores, each with their own variations of the usual wares of overstock plastic and paper goods. Not a lot has happened in North Park that anyone seems to remember or talk about much these days. A famous baseball player was born here, but he has long since moved away. There was a big airplane disaster in the 70s, but the obliterated houses have been replaced with several blocks of new stucco condominiums with red tiled roofs. Every year there is the "Famous North Park Toyland Parade" featuring the usual shriners, unknown politicians and assorted other marchers. It rained this year. Hardly anyone came out.
