Hey Linda, I just found this post, buried and it's a good question! :)
The Voodoo Stix kind of evolved. The first stix came about when a piece of my balcony broke off a few years ago. The building I live in is antebellum (pre Civil War) as most all the French Quarter is. The balcony is very old and in dire need of repair. When I'd catch my foot on it, I would tear the piece off to avoid tripping over it. Well the wood was really ancient & interesting looking so I stuck it in my plants. Then I wrote some words on it, I think basil or the name of the plant initially. Then I started painting hearts and flowers and stuff on them and added some of those streamers or beads after Mardi Gras. .They were so primitive they were kind of dangerous- got a few slivers here and there. So when the slats surrounding the A&P's a/c unit in my courtyard started falling down, I picked em up and those are what I am using now for my Voodoo Stix. They are a bit newer maybe from the 40's.
I guess I am an "outsider" artist, someone who expresses themselves with whatever they have lying around. I always was an artist since I can remember but never had enough time to study and pursue it, raising my 2 daughters by myself since I was a teenager, lordy! Now they're grown and I just want to express myself.
