SANCTUARY RETREAT
MAP A
couple of days after Easter 2002, we spent 2 nights at a unique
rainforest retreat at Mission Beach, which is half way between Townsville
and Cairns. When you arrive at the car park (above) you have to call on an
intercom and a four-wheel drive vehicle comes to get you as the track to the
retreat is 40-45 degrees (very steep).
There
is a main building which houses a bar, restaurant, reception and self-serve
kitchen for those so inclined. The view over the rainforest to the ocean is
fantastic. Accommodation is mainly in small canvas-roofed, shade-cloth walled
huts right in the rainforest (See above). There are three timber, self contained
cabins as well.
While
swimming in their pool, a family of cassowary ( the size of emu ) came out of
the forest to the edge of the grass seen in the photo above.
There
is a secluded beach only a couple of minutes from the car park where the
rainforest meets the sea |
