34. Joseph Chandler4 Burton (Elias Chandler3, Peter Early2, John1) was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA May 26, 1895. Joseph died May 2, 1978 in Cape Coral, Fl, at 82 years of age. His body was interred in New Salem Cem., Calera, Al.
He married Margaret Lillian Woodruff in Grand Rapids, Mi., September 2, 1924. Margaret was born in
Grand Rapids, Mi. March 8, 1901. Margaret died September 14, 1984 in Arlington, Va., at 83 years of age. Her
body was interred in New Salem Cem., Calera, Al..
Joseph's occupation: Attorney.
Joseph Chandler Burton Sr. was a graduate of Auburn Univ., Ala in Chemistry His college education was interupted by WWI when he served as
an Army 2nd Lt. He later attended The Univ. of Chicago and earned his law degree. He practiced private law in Birmingham, Ala and during the
depression moved to Atlanta, Ga. In 1939 he was called from Reserve to active duty as a Major in the Army Air Corps. where he served until
1945. He attained the rank of Col. and was awarded the legion of merit. There followed a number of years as legal council to the Veteran's
Adm. before retiring to Cape Coral, Fla. In Fla. he served in numerous civic positions including the incorporation of the city and the
establishment of the library. He successfully ran for Mayor of the city and served with distinction. Upon his death a city park was named in
his honor and a bronze plaque was dedicated to his service as organizer of the City library. He is buried beside his parents and wife in the
New Salem Cenmetery, Calera, Ala.
