Barney H. Browning Sr. was the founder and chairman of the board of Barney Browning & Sons, Inc., a North Jacksonville based fuel oil distributing firm. He served as president of the Northside Business Men's Club, the North Jacksonville Civitan Club, the Springfield Lions Club, the Morocco Temple Wrecking Crew and the Y.M.C.A. Council. He served on the board of directors of the Halfway House and the Rescue Mission. He was a member of the Board of De Molay, the North Jacksonville Shrine Club, the High 12 Club of Jax 421, the B P O E Lodge 221, the Elks, the Francis T. Hurlbert Lodge 259 F&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the Morocco Temple and the Brentwood Chapter OES. The playground at Norwood Avenue and Crestwood Street in north Jacksonville, was dedicated and named after him.
