Play By Ear...

20th April 1997

It's 9.32 pm on a Sunday night. I feel as though I'm submerged under water... well at least it sounds like it. The sound of rising water bubbles is coming from my PC's screen saver. This will be a long mail... If you feel like reading this in installments, please feel free to do so.

Many of you will be reading this late May or early June. Anyway I hope exams were breezy and your ideas came pouring out in buckets until the exam hall was flooded, candidates started making paper boats with the answer sheets, invigilators went round in sampans and, and, and...

Anyway, Saturday saw four CUSians (at least... there were definitely more) in Pulau Tikus church. Three of them just finished their exams. They felt so light with no more burden on their shoulders that they practically floated their way to church. The fourth one never really started any papers.

After mass, two of them had a chat with Fr. Ignatius in the parochial house while the other two started looking at the things which were on the shelves in the lounge. One of them found an envelope full of small scissors... Then they stumbled on a board game with an uncommon name. It's called Ungame. A game of self-expression. Mysterious as it may sound, they gingerly opened the cover to see what's inside... they heard the sound of distant drums beating... Bumph, pum, pum, pum... Bumph, pum, pum, pum...

As Fr. Sebastian was about to leave for a Teluk Bahang mass, they quickly got permission to take the game with them, much to their delight. One of them put the big box into his small bag and they merrily trodded to Midlands Park for dinner.

After dinner, they adjourned to Desa Permai Indah to try out the uncommon-sounding Ungame. It was 11 pm. After reading the instructions they decided on a time frame. It was then 11.15 pm and they would stop at 12 midnight.

The whole idea of the game is sharing and listening. You roll the die and at certain squares, you pick up a card and answer the question. The game had three deck of cards: one for light or ice-breaking sharings, one for serious sharings and one for Christian sharings. We chose the first deck... One read: If you could change your body, which part would you change and why? Another read: Which story did you enjoy as a child and why? No one is allowed to pass comments or ask questions. However, when you land on the comment and question squares, you are allowed to do so. Others are emotion squares where if you feel affectionate, angry, excited, frustrated or lonely, you get to express yourself. Some of them did feel affectionate because they had a hugging session with another 2 CUSians at the pedestrain crossing at the Komtar bus-stop just outside the Chinese temple. The other 2 were on their way to Our Lady of Sorrows church.

They ended the game at 1.30 am today, way pass the agreed time frame. However they now know more about themselves. Indeed, it was a night played by ear... one thing led to the other... an impulsive but unique way to end the semester.

Actually, I would like to go on sharing but I think I shall not take up too much of your precious time at Pusat Komputer. Until I hear from you, take care and God bless you.

Yours 'Ungame'ly, (but
I'm still game for
anything good. Hee! Hee!)
