Pukook-Pururrr......

3rd July 1997

In case you're wondering what the subject of this mail is, well, it is supposed to be the sound of a pigeon...

It's 12.10 pm on a very ordinary Thursday afternoon. We at the lab are all smartly dresses, standing-by for any visits by the Penang Chief Minister or his entourage. They are here for some official opening. Anyway they were already around since this morning and they have not set foot into our lab. I guess they will not be coming in anymore.

I was on a ferry to the mainland on 27/6. I sat at one end of a bench and there were cake or biscuit crumbs on the floor by my side. A pigeon flew by and landed among the crumbs and started pecking. Peck-peck... Peck-peck... I was quite amused... cute little fellow.

A little while later it flew of. "Could it be calling friends over to share the meal?" I thought to myself. Sure enough. In a short while, there were three pigeons pecking away at the crumbs (let's assume the original pidgeon was one of the three because I did not bother to see where it first flew off to). I overheard one of them said, "Whoa! So much food... thanks for calling us over-ah...".

Isn't nature wonderful? It's amazing how animals communicate and I guess it challenges us humans into thinking how we can foster better relationships with our fellow human beings.

Until then, take care and... happy pecking? God bless.
