In March 2000, complaints and grumblings were heard around the United States as gasoline prices crept upward. I volunteer at Exploris, the world's first global experience center and I thought it would be a good idea to show people that we actually pay much less for fuel than other folks around the world. I contacted various US Embassies and friends and asked how much they paid the last time they bought gas for their car. I converted the metric units to English, and then I converted the currency to US dollars at the Universal Currency Converter website. This was not very scientific in that no attempts were made to standardize to a certain octane level or grade, and prices were documented over a 3-week period in late March/early April 2000.
