Wolf Facts
Wolves
do not attack humans. There has never been one documented case
of a healthy wild wolf attacking a human. Hear that? Not one !
Wolves
are highly intelligent, social animals that travel in packs ranging
from 8 to 20 members. Some members stay in this pack for life.
Each pack
is led by a dominant male and female.
The dominant
male prevents confrontations by staring down his opponents. The
female will do the same to keep her mate. There are very few fights
within the pack.
The young
pups are watched and raised by the entire pack.
Wolves
mainly hunt and kill for food. They usually prey on weak, injured,
or diseased animals. In doing so, they can improve the overall
strength of the species they hunt. Example: deer, caribou, and
moose.
Wolves
are not a huge threat to livestock. The number of sheep and cattle
deaths that can be blamed on wolves is less than 1% per year.
Wolves
have a keen sense of smell which allows them to find prey from
great distances. They can also locate other pack members, or enemies,
just by the scent.
Wolves
do not howl at full moons. They howl to communicate, greet, ward
off enemies, gather their pack, or just for fun. They just might
howl during a full moon to gather their pack for hunting in the
lighter night sky.
