I think this page requires just a little bit of explanation. As you have
already noticed, my name is Kevan, and no, this is not a misspelling. When
my mother was pregnant with me, my parents had decided to call me Kevin (if
I turned out to be a boy, that is, and I did). While visiting my mother's
parent's home (at that time, my soon-to-be grandparents), they bumped into an
acquaintence of my mother's, who was also pregnant at the time. She announced
that she was going to name her child Kevin if it was going to be a boy (I have no
idea if the woman had a boy or not). This kind of upset my mother a bit, as she
and my father had already decided on the name and did not want to appear to be
copying this woman, so they decided to alter the spelling a little, and thus, on
August 8, 1962, in the wee hours of the morning at Aroostook General Hospital in
Houlton, Maine, I made my appearance into this world (all 7 pounds, 15 ounces of
me).
Growing up with the name Kevan was a little difficult. Noone ever made fun of my
name (so this is not a tragic story where the main character suddenly goes postal
or something like that), but people frequently misspelled my name, (and one person
suggested that I legally change my name to Kevin) mostly because
they didn't know. Sometimes, as a gift, I would get stuff that had my name on it,
but since this was the late 60's and early 70's, I had to settle for stuff with the
name 'Kevin' on it, while my brothers got theirs with the correct spelling of their
name. Going into the 80's and 90's (ahhh, glorious adulthood), people still misspelled my
name, but I took less offense to it than before, only because they don't know (I
often tell them that it's all right, just so long as they spell my name right when
making checks out to me).
Then comes along this amazing thing called the Internet. I never thought about it
much until recently, when I did some on-line searches and discovered that there are
others out there with the same spelling of my first name. Amazing (and an interesting
bit of therapy, I think).
This page is dedicated to those out there who are also named Kevan. I don't know
if they've gone through the same stuff as I did growing up, but I was amused and
pleased to find others like me (with the same spelling, that is).
