The University

The University of Oulu, or Oulun Yliopisto, is divided into many different campuses throughout Oulu. International students in the Scandinavian Studies program tend to live and work at the Linnanmaa campus, which is about a 15-minute bus ride from the Center.
As you leave the Center and move closer to Linnanmaa, you may catch sight of young Finns in brightly colored jumpsuits and white hats with long tassles. These are uniforms for the students to wear at special events and presentations. Each department has a different colored jumpsuit. The patches on the jumpsuit and the knots in the hat tassle give information about the student. This is a postcard of a student holiday downtown, probably Vappu, which is May Day.
This is the Humanities Wing of the Linnanmaa campus. Nearly all of the Scandinavian Studies courses are held here.
Come inside, but be careful! Many of the doors are automatic, but they swing outward in such a way that you stand to get one planted in your forehead if you're not careful.
All Oulu University students get a free e-mail account which can be checked from any of these convenient terminals located throughout the university's halls.
If the weather is nice, we can go outside and up the road to the lovely Oulu University Botanical Gardens. Pictured here are Romeo and Juliet, the university's pyramid-inspired greenhouses.
Enjoy the blue sky while it lasts! Once October hits, we may not see it anymore.
