Kayak in Wild Alaska

Early in the morning, Heather and I took the kayak excursion. We paddled our way across the channel (bottom) in search of wildlife. We saw one bald eagle (left) in the typical fashion -- we got pretty good at identifying a dot on the end of a twig. The tour ended with a trip of Creek Street. When the tide is low, you can actually walk where we were kayaking.

This boardwalk on pilings (right) became the red light district in 1903 when the City Council ordned all bawdy houses relocate to the Creek and Stedman Street area. In its heyday, there wre over 30 houses, most with one or two working girls. After prohibition in 1920, the houses also became speakeasies. Bootlegged alcohol was lifeted through trap doors in the floors at high tide from small boats as liquor sales became more lucrative than prostitution. Business boomed for over 50 years until 1953 when a grand jury investigation caused several scandals and closed the houses. Many are now occupied by reputable and varied businesses.
