Chapter 7

Dana sighed happily as she closed the door to her apartment. A feeling of
warmth waved over her as she remembered the intense moment Nick and her shared.
She sighed again, and walked into the kitchen. Placing her bag on the table she
went to make a coffee.

"Faith?" she called. Waiting for a reply she reached into her bag for the
earrings Nick had given her. She took them out of the box and placed them in
her hand.

"Faith?" She called again walking to the mirror in by the door. When their was
no answer she put the earrings on and admired them happily. She couldn't
believe he'd bought her a present. No one ever bought her anything for no
reason.

Dana wandered back to the kitchen to make her coffee, and pressed play on her
answer machine. There was one message and she sat to listen.

"Hi Dana? I got caught in traffic so wont be back till 7ish. Tell my mom that
I'll give her a call when I get in."

Dana glanced at her watch. It was 6.45 and Dana had planned to meet Nick for
dinner at 8pm. She got up from the stool she was sat on and picked up her
coffee, before walking into her room. She passed her chest and went into the on-
suite bathroom to run a bath. Turning the taps and tipping in some bath salts,
she wandered back to her wardrobe, sipping her coffee. Dana thumbed through her
wardrobe for evening wear suitable for dinner. She finally picked out a deep
scarlet dress which had thin straps and dropped to her ankles. She found the
matching white cardigan and shoes and flung them on the bed. Returning to the
bathroom she closed the door behind her before soaking in the warm water,
unaware that the telephone had begun to ring.

"Dana?" Faith called as she walked through the apartment door.

"In here." Dana shouted from her relaxing bath. Faith assumed that ment she was
in the bathroom and carried on as normal. On her way to the kitchen Faith
pressed the flashing play button on the answer machine and listened to the
messages.

She groaned as she heard her voice on the speaker and listened to her stupid
message whilst pouring some coffee. She was about to stop the recorder when a
familiar voice came on the speaker.

"Hey D, It's Josh. Sorry I havn't seen you for a while but I'v had stuff to get
for the you-know-what. Give me a ring. We really need to talk"

Faith stopped in her tracks. She wasn't sure whether to tell Dana about the
call or not. She paused to think as she sipped her black coffe on the couch.

"Hey Faith, You will never guess what happened!"

Her thoughts were interupted by Danas' excited voice. She looked up to see Dana
standing behind the couch in a towel and wet hair.

"What?" Faith replyed, humoring her.

"I'm off out with Nick tonight AND-"

"Nick?"

"Yeah anyway look what he got me" Dana pointed to the gold earrings which
glistened from the water which clung to then.

"Their nice, Listen-" Faith paused not knowing what to say. She had never seen
Dana so happy about another guy. She was always miserable if Josh hadn't seen
her for a while and now for the first time she looked content. Why spoil her
moment of joy? Faith thought.

"What do want?" Dana asked after waiting at her door for the past minute or so.

"Hmm? Oh Nothing" she said before returning to her coffee.

An hour later Dana appeared from her room after rushing around trying to figure
out make-up, hair and clothes. She walked in front of the TV which Faith was
contently watching and twirled around, a small purse in her left hand and her
white cardigan in the other.

"Well? What d'ya think?" She said excitedly, as if she was a teenager going on
her first date.

"You look great, but isn't that my purse."

"Yeah I found it in your room and wondered if I could borrow it?" She replyed
sheepishly.

"Sure thing" Faith said slowly.

"Anyway I'd better get going It's only 7.45 but there might be traffic." Dana
said whilst struggling with her cardigan.

"7.45? Dana, It's 8 o'clock!"

"What?" Dana cried fighting with her cardigan to look at her watch. "Shit, I
gotta go"

Faith chucked Dana her car keys and wallet from her bag which was by her feet, as Dana checked her hair and makeup in the mirror. Faith stuffed the wallet
into the purse and shoved it and the keys into Danas' hands. Dana quickly
opened the door and ran down the steps, waving to Faith.

"Don't wait up" she shouted as she disappeared around the corner, and skipped
hurridly to her car.

***************

Where is she? Nick thought. He was standing in the hotel lobby just outside the
restaurant doors. He had decided the hotel was the safest place to eat without
screaming fans chasing them. At the moment it was working.

Dana was now 15 minutes late and getting later. The receptionist had already
given Nick a number of worried looks since he'd been there from ten to eight.
Nick was pacing back and forth in front of the door, opening it for whoever
happened to come past. Panicing he looked towards the door for the umpteenth
time.

A smile began at the corner of his mouth as he sppotted a girl who looked like
Dana. She turned and his smile changed to a surprised-almost shocked look. The
girl waved at him and stunned Nick waved back. He couldn't believe it was the
Dana he had met at Mac DOnalds or the Dana he saw yesterday. Danas' dark hair
was piled on her head in a wild bun, and as she neared him he saw that small
tendrils fell by her ears and framed her face.

"Hey" she whispered, a smile creeping across her face.

"Hey" he said back, mimicking her delecate words.

As she came closer, he grabbed her waist and lifted her above him whilst
spinning wildly. Dana shreiked when her toook her in his arms and then began
giggling as he spun her round.

"Put me down!" she cried not caring who heard. The receptionist was at this
point watching intently at the couple who looked so much in love.

"Put me down!" she cried again. Nick listened this time and lowered her gently
to the floor. As her feet touched the linoleom floor, Nick kissed her nose
softly, before taking her hand in his.

Dana felt a funny feeling rip through her. A sense of Deja Vue, but she dismissed it quickly.

At dinner, Nick and Dana were on the balcony of the restaurant. Not many people
were there so they basically sat alone and watched the sun set. When they had
eaten, the two sat opposite from one another talking about anything and
everthing. They knew almost everything about eachother and by the time the sun
set they were content with talking.

"...and then my brother came running out to play with me and ran straight into
the patio doors!"

Nick laughed at another of Danas' family stories. They had been telling
eachother of their childhood and somehow got into comical tales and reeled them
of one at a time. It seemed they both had funny families.

Nicks' lauhter stopped and so did Danas'. Nick looked into Danas' emerald eyes
and took her hands as he set down his glass.

" I'm having a great time." he said softly. "I never thought I'd find nother
person with a family as weird as mine."

"Your family is not weird." Dana replyed.

"Oh yeah thats what you think. When you meet them you'll definatly agree!"

Dana was startled at his words. When? SHe looked up at him and smiled trying to
hide her surprised look. Nick leant over and kissed her, and immediatly Dana
forgot her thoughts. Nicks' right hand was under Danas' chin. and Dana moved
hers so it was in his hair. When Nick pulled away she smiled, and he looked
down at the hand which lay in his. A ring with five diamonds was placed on
Danas' index finger.

"Hey, Is this from anyone special?" he said holing her hand up and inspecting
the ring. Dana froze and the smile which generated joy and happiness, dropped
from her face. Dana stood quickly pushing the chair from beneath her and
whipping her hand away from Nicks hold. An unwelcome wave of realisation beat
over her as she stared at Nicks' now confused face. A tear trickled from Danas'
eye as her focus blurred and Nick became a fuzzy picture before her eyes.

"Dana what's wrong?" Nick said softly walking towards her. The voice echoed in
her head as she saw the figure move nearer. Dana backed away as Nick moved to
take her hands.

"Dana?" Nick repeated, confused as to what was going on.

"Oh Nick" Dana finally replyed a little husky from her tears which were now
flowing freely from her tear strained eyes."I'm so sorry."

"Why are you sorry Dana?" Nick said trying to make sense of the girl that stood
in front of him. He thought he knew everything about this person. They had
talked about everything and now her was more confused than ever. "Is it your
dad?" He did't know why but that was the only thing he could think of which
might have upset her.

Dana shook her head in disagreement. "It's Josh" She replyed before turning and
running twoards the door of the restaurant. Nick was still confused and began
to run after her. He grabbed her arm just outside the door and took her by the
shoulders.

"Who's Josh?" he cried, with great confusion and dispair in his voice.

Dana began to cry more and she dropped her head. She felt his hand under her
chin and he lifted her head . Their eyes were level and he looked at her with
more love than ever before.

"My Boyfriend!" she cried. With that she released herself from his grasp and
ran from the hotel, turning once to looke at the troubled Nick who stood still
and silent.

"Wait" he shouted, but it was too late. He turned and walked back to the table
on the balcony. As her sat in Dana' seat her kicked something under the table.
Looking closly he saw a scarlet purse, with a white flower patern on it. He
looked inside and found Danas' wallet. Dana Katherine White he read on the
inside of the wallet.

"Shit" he cursed as he walked out of the restaurant and into the lift, the
purse in his hand and the wallet in the other.
