Chapter 8

Dana closed the apartment door behind her and fell against it tears
streaming from her face. She dropped the keys she was holding and began to sob
loudly. Faith was sat on the couch, with a very puzzled look on her face.

"Dana?" Faith said softly moving and standing behind her friend. Dana calapsed
to the floor her back against the door, tears still falling in groups down her
face.

"I think I know whats happened but why don't you tell me the whole story" Faith
said in a quiet tone to Dana. She now sat beside her friend in the same
position as her, trying to make sense out of the situation.

After an hour or so, Dana and Faith were sat on the couch with coffee in hand.
Dana had just finished her story about Nick and Josh and by this time she had
stopped crying.

"I just don't know what to do now?"

"Do you love Josh?"

"Yes and No."

"Do you love Nick?"

"Yes" A smile started at the corner of Danas' mouth and dropped again as she
thought about her problems. Faith laughed.

"This is not funny."

"Dana, do you realise who makes you smile now?"

"Who?"

"Nick. I think you and Josh have some talking to do."

Dana picked up the black cordlesss telephone and dialed Joshs' number. The
ringing whcih penetrated her ears was loud and meloncholly. Faith excused
herself and left Dana on the couch her trembling hand clasped around the
telephone. The ringing stopped and she heard Joshs' voice.

"Hello?"

"Hi! Josh. It's Dana"

"Hey" Joshs' voice was happy and this made things harder for Dana.

"We need to talk" Dana said with all her courage.

"About what?" Josh asked not really sure where she was coming from.

"Josh, I think we should stop seeing eachother."

Dana felt a tear roll down her face as she began to feel her emotions build up
again. There was a long pause with nothing but silence from both of them. Dana
could here Joshs' breathing on the other end of the line. It was slow and she
could almost hear him running the words through his head. Dana wished he would
say something to her.

"Josh?" she asked. " Josh? I'm sorry. Talk to me, please"

There was no sound from Josh. He was silent and Dana kept pleading with him to
say something to her. He finally cut in.

"Dana, I don't think I can talk to you"

With that Dana heard the loud dialling tone coming from the reciever. She
calapsed into tears the phone still held to her ear.

"Josh?" she whispered before dropping it to her lap. She covered her face with
her hands and lay down on the couch. Her head was spinning with thoughts, Nick
mostly. As she lay on the couch she gently drifted into a deep sleep.

*************************

Dana awoke the next morning to the ringing of her telephone. The shock almost
made her jump of the couch, and when she stood she felt her head pounding. The
telephone was still ringing and Dana began searching wildly under the cushions
of the furniture for her cordless phone. The answer machine took it and Dana
listened to the message.

"Dana? It's mum. Phone me when you get back."

Dana stopped searching. Her mom wasn't that important at the moment, Nick was
her main priority. Dana had done alot of thinking and decided to telll Nick
everything and then if he stilll wanted her, he could.

Dana glnced at her watch. It was 11.30am. Dana quickly put on some clothes,
left a note for her flatmate, grabbed her keys and ran out the door to her car.

Pulling into the parking lot, Dana noticed that the security of the hotel had
decreased and that there were no fans outside it. Dismissing the change she
made her way to the door of the elegant hotel. Dana entered through the large
glass doors as she had done before, and walked up to the receptionist who was
coincidently the same person as the night before.

"Hello, welcome to The Pavillion, How can I help?"

Dana was taken aback by the cheerfulness of the lady but carried on regardless.

"Hi, Can I speak to Nick Carter? He's staying in room 103."

"Carter did you say?"

"Yes, tell him Dana's here"

Dana turned her head from the lady to look around, but immediatly turned back
when she heard what she said.

"I'm sorry, did I hear you right. Nick isn't here?"

"Yes that's right. Mr Carter checked out this morning about half an hour ago. I
can check to see if theres a message?"

"thank you" Dana was stunned but stayed calm in front of the desk. She watched
as the receptionist scanned her computer screen, typing in words and numbers as
she went. Her mind was in deep concentration, whilst Dana watched in
antisipation. How could he leave without saying goodbye? she thought.

"Ah" said the receptionist

"What?" Dana asked a little too enthusiastically.

"Well, there is a message. What's your name?"

"Dana, Dana White"

"Yes." Dana watched as the receptionist got up and moved to a number of safes
behind the desk. She took a key and unlocked one. She removed two objects from
the metal cupboard and placed them on the desk. Dana stared at them. There was
a letter addressed to Dana and also her purse containing her brown wallet. Dana
picked up the items and sat on a nearby chair.

"thank you" she said to the receptionist who was watching her. Danas' voice was
almost a whisper and the lady strained to hear her.

Dana placed the purse on the table and held the envelope in her hand. The
scribble on the front was clearly Nicks, and Dana smiled at seeing her name in
his hand writing. She turned the envelope and opened it, removeing a folded
piece of paper. Unfolding it, she saw a photo attatched to the back. It was her
and Nick. She remembered the picture being taken at dinner last night. The
waiter had offered to take a photo with Nicks camera and they had posed on the
balcony, the sun setting behind them. Letting a tear flow from her eye she read
the letter.

Dana

There is no easy way to leave someone you love, thats why I found it so hard to
leave you. Please understand that there will always be a special place in my
heart for you. And the memory of you will be with me forever. If I were to
stay, it would only complicate things, and right now you need time alone to
sort out your problems. Dana, I will always love you and I hope you realise
what you gave me over these past few days.

Never forget that and always remember me.

Love always
Nick

Dana smiled as a single tear fell to the page and smudged Nicks' name. She
folded the paper thinking all the time of Nicks' words.

Then she stopped. There was no address or number for her to contact Nick. How
was she going to tell him that she and Josh were not together anymore? How was
she going to tell him that she loved him as much as he loved her? Dana walked
back to the desk wiping the tears from her eyes.

"Um, did Ni- I mean Mr Carter leave a fowarding address or telephone number?"

The receptionist checked her details on the computer and shook her head.

"Are you sure?"

"Positive" said the lady looking puzzled. Dana turned and cursed.

"Nick, why are you so stupid?" She cried in the hotel lobby. Several people
turned to look at her including the receptionist.

"Um, are you talking to me?" She asked. Dana turned to the lady.

"Oh, no" she apologised and left the building feeling very embarrassed.
