The Year That Was

As Far as I Remember

The year that was 1998 seems to fail memory in terms of current events. The lion's share of events were shadowed behind the darkness of political controversy. Anything that may of had any real significance at all seems to to have taken a back seat to the shinanigans of our President and his intern. THis being the case, there is really very little to focus on beyond the fact that there is very little to focus on. So that wins.

How the hell as a nation do we allow ourselves to focus on the truely inconcequential? Who cares that Clinton did what he did, especially a year ago. There were plenty of important things that happened that we as a nation just let go while we were watching the affairs of the President. I don't know what they were though because all I could get on tv was the Clinton thing.

One significant case was of the young gay man who was picked up from a bar and tortured and beaten and left crucified on, I believe, a tree. He died in the hospital. The girlfriends of the men responsible claimed that he deserved what he got because he was gay. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ABOUT?

What I want to know is why wasn't the nation outraged at this atrosity? How can something like this happen in the 1990's? Perhaps it was common place in the 1890's but not now. I mean come on, even if you are against homosexuality, crucifixtion is not the way to express yourself...it is appauling to me that we are still, as a nation, so far behind in our human rights issues.

This year the republican congress continued to block the president's progress, or I should say what little progress he could make having to defend issues in his personal life. On the plus side, however, we did rid ourselves of Newt. You know most Republicans I have talked to have professed to hating him as much as I do...I tend to disagree just on basic principle as I hate him about as much as anyone can hate a person they have never met, but the point is that he was a pain in everyone's ass across the board.

Infidelity became a deal breaker for political office, the new Speaker of the House of course resigned after his adulterous past in a self rightous attempt to save face and damage Clinton at the same time. Republican supporters attempeted to rally around him, claiming that it wasn't the same thing...yeah they are right it was with a different woman. I am really against cheating but come on! It has no place in politics. If everyone who had affairs in this country would have to resign from office, I think the whole country would be shut down faster than congress could close the government. I am not saying what either men was right but just that it had nothing to do with the offices they hold...or who they hold in their offices.

So what we had this year, more or less, was a substitute for the OJ trial and a bunch of significant things that went unnoticed because of it. Personally the year went okay for me...it started out with sex and then stopped. Not that that really matters in the long run. I got a band together, I reconnceted with a friend I hadn't talked to in a year and have been rebuilding our friendship, My job has gotten better, I've done better in japanese, I am doing the UofA full time and I am feeling pretty good in general. So that was my year, hopefully the next will be better, although it hasn't impressed me so far.

Well if you thought this was as lame as I did, write and let me know, if for some reason you liked it let me know that to.
