CHAPTER THREE

LET'S GET BIOLOGICAL

Human bodies are amazing. A woman and a man are perfectly designed to compliment and fit each other sexually. Female sexuality operates as a cycle of biological events. About every month, along with hormone changes, a woman's body discards the egg (ovum) which hasn't been fertilized and replaces it with another. This is usually accompanied by some discomfort and bleeding.

A man's body does not follow a monthly cycle. He has two supply and storage areas (testicles) where a fluid (semen) is produced which contains millions of sperm cells. These can propel themselves upwards to enter an egg cell. In this way, the two halves of the information to make a new human being come together. Once the first sperm is in, the egg usually keeps out the rest and the new human begins nine months of growth in the mother's womb. Then comes the time to head on out and meet Doctor, Nurse, Mum and Dad if he hasn't fainted.

While the young man's sexuality doesn't follow the same predictable rhythm, this body does vary. As the level of semen builds up he is often more prone to sexual excitement. The involuntary way of release may happen at night during sleep when his body releases excess semen. This is called a 'nocturnal emission' or a 'wet dream' and is often associated with a dream about a member of the opposite sex. A man is responsible for what he thinks when awake, not what he dreams when asleep though this is affected to a degree by what he thinks when awake.

YOUR MOST IMPORTANT SEX ORGAN

When speaking to some boys some time ago I asked what they thought their most important sex organ was. I think they were a bit stunned. One brave boy suggested "the penis". Then another suggested "the brain". The second boy was right of course. While our other sexual apparatus is important… that is where the action happens, it is all controlled by the mind… and male and female minds work differently.

A young man can be turned on and ready to have intercourse with release of semen (orgasm) within a minute or two. He is stimulated mainly by what he sees, though touch is important.

It is different for a woman. Time, a suitable atmosphere, a sense of being secure and sensitive touching are important in a woman's readiness for sex.

Understanding this variation in male and female reactions is important. Without realising it, or intending to, some girls fire up the sexual urges of men by wearing clothes or swimsuits that accentuate their sexual areas or by adopting seductive body positions. Alternatively, boys can be unintentionally flirting in the way they speak to women, or by touching them in the many sexually sensitive areas of their bodies.
