For those new paintballers or paintballers who can't afford a really expensive thermal mask, there are ways to avoid fogging. Fogging can be a serious problem since it is hard to clean out (on the field), some choices need to be made to stop it. One of the better choices (which most people do) is to upgrade to a better mask with a thermal lense built in or an anti-fog coating. Other choices include using some sort of anti-fog insert (like a Zero-Fog Insert), using a anti-fog spray, or buying something like the Crosswind Fan to mount on your mask to ventile it. Getting a better mask with some sort of fog stopping coating/lense is definitely the best choice. The anti-fog inserts definitely do work but they are hard to maintain, easily lost, and kind of blur your vision (at least the ones I used) on the field (though they do stop the fog). As for the spray, I have never used it, but I hear that it does work and is not quite as costly; obviously, however, you would need to apply it regularly which is probably the draw back. The Crosswind Fan by JT USA seems like another good choice except...it ranges from $45 to $60! Now, that is a lot for a little fan! Now, finally, my possible solution to this all. We all know of Radio Shack and its great innovations. Next time you're near one, stop by and pick up a small (i mean small) computer fan (two would be even better), a little wiring, a small on/off switch, and an adaptor for a 9 volt battery. Since it is pretty simply, wire up all the parts and attach it to the mask. With JT USA masks and visors, it is easier since you can cut out part of the visor and replace it with the fan. It actually makes the visor more secure. The next time you go out to play, either use the fan to clear out your mask (every now and then) or keep it on constantly (which I like to do). Now...if you have some sort of connection with a buddy that works at a computer store, this could cost you practically nothing (since the fan and switch are the most expensive parts). However, if you don't, it will still cost you around $20 or so. Now, some of you might argue that this isn't worth it. Well, I would have to agree but it is a nice handy project you can do. Since this would only be an extra $20 to your mask (which is usually a bad mask since most starting players have softstreams and this is a good improvement), this is a good choice for some people who can't afford a JT Spectra Flex-7 mask. So, it is up to you, the reader, to decide which is the best choice for you :) I recommend that if you are buying a package deal with a softstream or x-fire, that you ask for a better mask (preferably thermal, trust me, you'll thank me later :)). Oh, and for those of you who realize that the 9 volt batteries would eventually add up to a lot of money, try using a RECHARGABLE one! :) Good paintballing to you all!
