I have been a fan of D. B. Velveeda's work since I saw an early issue of H*rny Biker Sl*t comic book. I already dug the comic's themes, as well as creator John Howard's art, but when I saw the good King's drawings... I fell in lust with his unique style, his very comic-book feel, his sharp/thick lines, his very expressive characters... Bref, he is to American comics what Masamune Shirow is to Japanese comics.
I've also got in touch with the dude, and I was glad to find out he wasn't a "full-of-himself artiste". He's very down to earth, very spontaneous, and (dare I say the C word) "cool" !
These pics I stole from his web site. There are DOZENS more there, but since geocities is a family-oriented web server, I couldn't include the "spicier" images! So go to http://www.cheesygraphics.com/ and have fun!
In the meantime, feast your eyes on these babies...
This is a funky design the king did for his friend Venus, who designs and creates custom jewelery and the like. Pretty nice, no?
Another interesting comishionned piece, from his web page.
this is the king's design for the yearly Court Of Porn exhibit. The T-shirt is available via his site for $18 postage paid!
Here's a tattoo design the king so graciously created for a pal of his. Note the very strong manga influence on this particular piece!

Tell him Alex Wheill sent you!
If you want some really sick sh*t from the good king, I strongly suggest you hunt down any issue of the subverssive american MALEFACT zine. Now, for obvious reasons, finding this zine in stores or anywhere in Canada is impossible, but you can always contact the king himself, or the fine folks at MALEFACT, to order an issue or two. But be warned: this zine is filled with page after page of really disturbing material, sure to shock even to most hardened hardcore fan!
The king has also contributed to many other people's visual design and graphics. For example, check out Dr. Ducky Doolittle's site for a few exclussive T-shirt designs, panties, etc... all with a unique VelVeeda picture on them! Go on, go ahead! We dare you!
His fantastic work can also be found within the pages of many underground zines and publication. His peculiar and unique style cannot be ignored, let alone forgotten, so keep those eyes peeled for the good old king's things!
Hey, if you got cash and consider yourself a serious art collector (or something), and you live near the Chicago area, but shure to check out the annual EXPO OF THE EXTREME, where the king himself usual has many original pieces for sale! If I had myself a few extra bucks, I'd buy that page from the story "Circle K" which was printed in an early issue (6? 7? 8?) of HBS comics... Ooooh la la!

I found a funky little D. B. VelVeeda interview on the web. It can be found HERE in its original version, but I have descided to re-print it beloy for you lazy types:
How did you come up with the name king velveeda?
Jesus gave it to me on my birthday.
Were you born & raised in Sandwich, MA.(cause I find it a little ironic; king velveeda - sandwich)?
That's why they named the town "Sandwich."
If you were stranded on an island what zine/book, album & movie would you like to have?
That depends. If the island was Bermuda, I would want the book, "How to Hypnotize Rich People." If the Island was Gilligan's I would want the Album "Music to Screw Ginger and Mary Anne By." And so on.
Have you ever had to tell anyone to fuck off? Would you like to now?
Oh sure, I've been telling people to fuck off for years. Tons of them. Now? No, not really.
What's the bigget project you have worked on to date?
That would have to be ROCKSTOCK '98. 3 stages, 30 bands, two 90 ft tall monkeys designed by yours truly. The radio station that sponsored it claimed that there were 30,000 kids there, but I only counted 25, 987. Still, it was HUGE.
What project are you most proud of?
Cheesygraphics.com and my world famous Picture of the Day (KVPOTD).
Is cheesy graphics a family business?
Only in the loosest Manson-Family-esque sort of way.
Who are the kings of rock to you?
All-Time: Black Sabbath. Runners Up: Misfits Current: Groovy Goolies Also Reign: Orange Goblin The Band Who Could Have Been Kings: Namsilat
Which is worse, being told exactly what someone wants on a project or being told to go wild?
You mean, "which is BETTER!" Either of those is great, really. The client whose tough to work with is the one who is: a) Not sure what they want b) Has a vague idea of what they want, but can't articulate it in any coherent manner, or, c) Knows what they want, tells me what they want, loves what I give them, and then takes a million years to pay me.
What is the best show you've been to?
One of the ones I can't remember, I'm sure.
What do you think of the diy/underground culture at the moment?
The internet will set us free, Brothers and Sisters. It will set us free! Hallalujah! It'll free us! It'll free us! Praise Christ on His Cross, my children, praise Him, it will save us all!!!!! Praise God. Hallalujah.
How long have you been into the underground culture?
Since 1979.
Were you punk before punk was cool?
Ye Olde VelVeeder remembers when a pierced ear would fetch a pretty punch in yer face from yon Jockes uplenty.
Have things changed much for you since you first started out & how?
I've gotten much larger, and I don't shit in a diaper anymore. Har! Har! No for real, things are different now because of the internet, which makes it easier for me to reach my audience directly. I can show my work to tons of people, in full color and sometimes animated, plus it's easier to make connections with people who need to hire an artist or web designer.
What's the average cost of a project(what's the normal limit that most people ask for)?
Well, Cheesy Graphics provides a full range of creative services from tattoo design, CD covers, comics and illustrations, graphic design, web design, etc etc, so it's kind of hard to say what an average project is. As a random example, I'll tell you that a full color illustration for the cover of a 45 or CD is going to cost the average band or indie label about $200 to $250.
Have you ever told anyone NO & if so, why?
I tried to tell Mike Tyson "no," but he's so much bigger than me. Har! Har! Seriously though, I once told a publisher to go to hell because she was pushing me too hard, man.
I think you told me before that you used to be in a band, if so can you give me some details?
I have no recollection of any activities on my part at any time that could in the most remote sense be termed "music."
