A Happy New Year to you all, wherever you may be. Sorry for the lack of a January mail-shot, due to me entirely since I have spent much of the last month in Wembley with work and when I haven't been there I have either been sleeping, at Burns Night, or at Alton Barn Dance.
The diary for this half of the year is beginning to fill up. Romsey are again holding their Casino Nightm which is a chance to have fun keeping Julia occupied at Blackjack whilst also having the chance to try out most if not all of the tables found inthe casino without losing your shirt. Last year even I managed to lose all my chips by the end of the evening.
Fareham have booked their race night (24th April) and they have assured me it is a race night with a difference so keep the date free.
And, well, I have to use my position as 1/2 of the District Secretary to my club's benefit once ina while since my club is hosting the radio-advertised toga-party on 13th February.
Since we are a little short on articles I have decided to do a little exposee on the District Executive - well it makes a change from Christchurch Rotaract and if I have no articles next month, well, I might have to do those not included this month. I'll be fair and start with myself :
Name : Heather Cooper
Occupation : Corporate Managers Assistant (at a certain bank)
Favourite Film : Contact - it caught my imagination
Musical Tastes : Ranges from Classical to the musicals through to chart music - basically whatever catches my ear (including Boyzone...)
Most Recent Club Fine : Leaving my car lights on and having to be push-started down Christchurch High Street by the Christchurch girlies with the alarm going - yes, Girl Power rides again - not one of the lads was in sight. The CCTV operators must have been wetting their pants (nah, they were probably asleep - SD)
Unknown Hobby : Playing the Clarinet
Most Irritating Habit : Well, Simon reckons it is my inability to : 1. Spel wen tipingg thees; 2. Yose ther spairl chairkerr (I'm sure I found it sometime when I did my degree) and 3. Ever finish one of these letters without getting stressed.
Name : Kevin Kynaston (District Sports and President of Ringwood and Fordingbridge)
Occupation : Office Equipment Engineer
Favourite Film : Top Gun he learnt to drive with it (explains a lot - SD)
Musical Tastes : Anything that is good to listen to - Wave FM rings a bell
Most Recent Club Fine : Christchurch always fines Kev for turning up at their meetings.
Unknown Hobby : Building a pedal car for the biannual challenge in Ringwood (lasted half a lap last time - SD)
Most Irritating Habit : Forgetting to send me the sports results without being chased at least twice at the beginning of the month.
Favourite Food : Anything that takes less than 20 minutes to cook (and less than two hands to eat - SD)
Next month I will introduce you to Alan Chamberlain and Cindy Whitfield.

In the past 3-4 months Salisbury Rotaract have been very busy on the social front with a host of entertaining activities. In November 1998 they went to the Blondie Concert at Poole Arts Centre and report that Debbie Harry is still very blonde.
December 1998 - the club visited Ben Elton's "Popcorn" at Bath along with a good day shopping, drinking, and eating.
Then, while some of us had been getting over Christmas, Salisbury have been to the Panto at the Salisbury Playhouse, which was very funny. According to Club member Steve, Aladdin was "very tasty".
Finally, Salisbury members have been to a rugby match at Bath (.v. Newcastle). A Salisbury spokesman commented : "We had a great day between the pub, the match, the pub, the curry house and various other pubs" (, adding "give us a kiss, you're my best friend, you are". - SD)

Alton Barn Dance : Once more, Alton did a very good job organising their annual Barn Dance. This, their 10th annual Barn Dance was held on Jan 9th in Alton's Assembly Rooms, and was well attended. Somewhere in the region of 40 Rotaractors were present, I believe, and probably 80 or 90 other people. I am informed that the event made around £400. The CLub put alot of effort into organising and publicising the event, and the hard work paid off. This event has become the traditional "first event of the year" for many clubs. And, yes, Kev did bring a whole bottle of Archers, and yes, he did drink it in a pint glass.
Southampton Burns Night : Another tradition came around on 23rd January with Southampton's Burns Night, held at the Minstead Village Hall. Again, quite a few turned up and the jovial caller somehow managed to draw people away from their alcohol for a bit of a Wurzel boogie. The ode to the haggis was followed by piper and drummer doing their thing, and once they had trotted off to the bar for a well-earned dram, the dancing (for want of a better word where some of us were concerned) continued until the band finally couldn't take it anymore, or more precisely, the bar shut :-(
Alton and Southampton once again proved that January doesn't have to be such a depressing month after all. :-)
