Dispatch

So you dialed 911. What's at the other end of the line?
You probably will have your call received by a dispatcher, many of whom are trained in EMD. These people know what questions to ask about your emergency. They want to several things:
-Who you are, and the number that you are calling from.
-What the nature of your emergency is; this let's them know what agency to dispatch, ie. police, fire, ems etc.
-Where you are; try to be specific, and if necessary provide directions.
DON"T HANG UP ON THEM!!!
Make sure that they have enough information. Many of these people can give you instructions about what to do until help arrives. Many a life has been saved by dispatchers providing information over the phone about an emergency.
Let them hang up first.
Many systems operate with CAD, or computer aided dispatch. These systems automatically provide the call back number, the address for that number, and some tell the closest unit and prompt the dispatcher with prearrival instructions.
In a tiered system, a BLS ambulance will be dispatched, and if certain criteria are met, paramedics will also be sent.
