Origin of the Name - Canada

Some young Indians were trying to explain to Jacques Cartier the way to the village of Stadacona (now Quebec City). The Huron-Iroquois word for village (or settlement) is "kanata". Cartier used the word Canada to refer to the entire area of Donnacona (which included Stadacona). "Canada" was used as an official name in 1971 when the Province of Quebec was divied into Upper and Lower Canada.

                Geography Anyone?

Canada consists of 10 provinces and 2 territories. (keep in mind the creation of a new territory called Nunavut ("Our Land" in Inukititut) in 1999. Visit Nunavut Planning Commission for more information.

So back to those provinces and territories:

The capital of Canada is Ottawa

The 10 provinces are (from West to East with their capitals...this is one class I did well in in school!!!) British Columbia (Victoria), Alberta (Edmonton), Saskatchewan (Regina), Manitoba (Winnipeg), Ontario (Toronto), Quebec (Quebec City), New Brunswick (Fredericton), Nova Scotia (Halifax), Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown), Newfoundland (St. John’s)
                and the 2 territories are:
Yukon Territory (Whitehorse) and Northwest Territories (Yellowknife)

My brother co-owns the "BeaverTails® at the Corel Centre" franchise. He hopes to have a web site up soon. If you've never had a BeaverTail - you don't know what you're missing. A BeaverTail is a whole wheat pastry, shaped like a beaver's tail and deep fried. Toppings are then added to it...like raspberry jam, chocolate sauce, or my favourite, garlic butter and cheese! Have a look at the mascot. BeaverTails® at the Corel Centre hopes to have a web site up soon. I'll try and carry any information and picutres I can until then! A big hi to Amy -- a head beaver and the brave one in the mascot picture!
