My Bayou Home

This is what I call my second home though I wish it was my first. I have many a fond memory of my life as a cajun. I have to say that the pictures are not the best, but then most were taken by friends on the bayou a long time ago.but they will give you the feel for my life in the swamps and the good times of a Cajun Life.

I will also tell you the I have been bitten by the snakes of Louisiana, both Water Moccasin and Timber Rattler more than I can care to talk about. It once almost cost me my life. If it had not been for a trapper that found me and took me to his cabin and saved my life. It was this old man that became my mentor of the swamps and taught me all that I know and taught me to survive in the wilds. This paid off for me in my later years in the jungles of South Viet Nam. But thats another story. Enjoy the pictures and be sure to check out my Louisiana Links to friends and our State history at my home link page..

.....Bayou Teche ....

This is the Bayou that leads to my my home in the swamps of South Louisiana. Most people canot even find the bayou off this one , as it is through some very harsh swamps. But if you can find Bayou Traie, then you might find my home. Untill 1975 there were not any roads to Grans place so the only way in was by boat.

This is the more or less the hidden entrance to Bayou Traie. If you were to go five miles down this little bayou you will find Grans place. Remember now that back when I was growing up, you had to go everywhere by pero (boat). I can remember going to school bare foot (everyone went bare foot back then) and paddling for three miles just to catch the bus that came to pick us up. Gee those were the days. Anyway there is now a road to Grans place and a lot of the romantics of the place are now gone.

....Grans Place....

Hey I see you made it and didn,t get lost or worse yet bit or eaten by some of my friendly neighbors. Any way this is Grans place. She was not my Grany, but she was the closest that I had to one. This was were I spent most of my time growing up on the bayous. This was my base of operations for many adventures as a young wipper-snappier. When I was here, Grans, after I got lost and she knew that I could care for myself, pertty much let me do as I pleased as long as I kept her knowing were and what I had planned.

....My Friend Joc'....

Joc was my best friend in the bayou. He was a few years my senior, but being that we were so far away from other kids (city folk) he and I just kinda joined up. We were almost like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. He taught me the way and wilds (in more ways than one) of the swamps and I taught him how to read. I later found out that he joined the service and learned how to read and write very well. He lost his mother at his birth and his father, well let's just say he never was much of a father after his mom passed on. By the way this little fellow that Joc' is holding got me when we got back to camp and I was removing him from the cage. Bite number nine if I remember right.

....Dinner Anybody....

Seeing that there was not many jobs along the bayou, Joc' and I use to catch fish, gators and snakes to sell at the local market. But we found that one of the best ways to make money was to put on a show for the tourist that traveled up and down the bayou tour boats. Gee those ladies and gents paid well to see us wrestle and catch an alligator. Course They never knew that 'Al' was a pet of sort. We use to put him on the shore and then call him out to us. Joc' or I (me mostly) would jump in the water and pretend to catch 'Al'. Course 'Al's' mouth was slightly tied so he never could get a bit on us, but the tourist never new and they paid well to see a young boy of nine to twelve show them the ways of the bayou and swamps. I remember that one time it was not 'Al' that came when called. Lucky for me, I didn't know that till after I got him in the boat. Then 'Al' showed up. I thought that Joc' was going to fall out of the boat he was laughing so hard. Needless to say I was not laughing.

........Swap thing's Home....

As I told you, I got bit when I was out fishing in the swamp by a water Mocciean and darn nere died. I most likely would have had it not been for a trapper/fisherman that found me. He took me to his cabin, nursed back to health and became a freind for life. He taught me so much about life and in a way was a father to me that I never had. He told me that his cabin was mine and I spent many a day and night with him. It was Jean that introduced me to Joc'. Jean use to say that we were a pair... Well I can't use that word here. I still know that the cabin is there, but Jean left us in 1979. He would have been close to 100 by then. He was born, rasied, and died in his beloved bayou. Joc' and I, along with a few others that new him buried him in his swamp that he loved so very much.

I have lost touch with Joc' over the years. But I think of him often. I went back to the cabin a few years back and was told that Joc' had just left after visiting a few days before. No one thought to find out where are what he is how doing. So to him and Jean, Adure.
